Like it says, where does the phrase "big damn hero" actually come from? Does it come from anywhere?
I tried googling it, but it was very unhelpful. :/
I have never heared that saying before!
Is it American only?
I don't know. I've never heard of it either. But it sounds sarcastic.
Something someone might say to belittle someone who was trying to be macho.
Its new to me too. Looks like maybe google hasnt heard of it either.
It's usually said in a way where you don't want the person to be a hero, but they are anyway.
I've seen it mostly on icons on livejournal... most of whom are likely American (since most users are, I think). hmmm.
I'm American and I've never heard of that (nor is it a British phrase, since that's where I currently live!).

It might be a fandom thing, in that case? My problem is that it has to come from SOMEWHERE, since it's a phrase I've seen used in multiple fandoms. :/
