bicycle fans here?

Sphaerenkern
Hello,
I wonder if there are bicycle fans in this forum. I like riding my bike cause it keeps me fit, doesn't cost any fuel (well, I have to eat anyway Very Happy) and is quite relaxative, though I could understand it if some people don't like riding the bike in bad weather.
What kinda bike do you have? Do you transport something with that? I have a trekking bike as well as a mountain bike, but I prefer the trekking bike. Though my bag is a messenger bag, I don't wear it when I drive my bike, I put it on the carrier, it's more comfortable.
I will add pics of my bikes later, maybe.

If you are interested in bike streetracing, check out http://digave.com/, by the way.

I love bicycling. I've got a 05 or 06 (can't remember) Gary Fisher Tassajara that I just love. But I haven't hit the mountains all year Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I really wish I had a nice road bike, but I don't have the funds right now.

I used to be really into cycling, built up a reasonably good mountain bike etc. but after riding everywhere for probably the last 5 years, I decided its really not for me. I just stopped enjoying it anymore.

Im kinda into it. I have a 1977 Shcwinn Sting BMX race bike and mint shape. I also have a Next Focus with a set of redline bars, and a redline flight crank.

I love riding bikes. One of my best friends fixes up old bikes, so the one I have now is a hybrid of 5 or so different old ones that he put together. It also makes me feel much better physically.

My breathing beeing more and more difficult, I stopped smoking two years ago.

I now commute by bike as often as i can, maybe two or three times a week.
I get much better.

sadly, cold season does'nt improve my asthma and I got bad bronchitis, and flu. Do you still ride during winter?

Still, riding is GREAT!

I avoid streets with high traffic, and sometimes, on my way back, i make myself a little pleasure and sprint a little, or try to make my way in less time i did.
It seems to me that the overall time depends more of traffic lights than of your VMA or fitness. I try to make an itinerary avoiding traffic lights, but unless you drive a bulldoser , it seems difficult in the city part of my trip. Smile
The solution could be of riding an all-road bike (i ride a city one), and crossing pedestrian zones, but it makes me loose too much time in the fast segments, is NOT visible by night by cars, and there is not the luggage-carrier that i need (spare clothes for work).

You ride a racing bike in the city? Do cars see you by night?

I ride in the winter until the snows start and the road gets salty and slushy. That stuff works deep into the bike and is pretty bad for it, so I ride the bus instead.

I find that my lungs don't like it when it just starts getting cold, but that after a few weeks they get used to it. They'll burn a bit if I inhale a lot of cold air. I have to get some real exercise, though, in order to make it go away. About two weeks worth of running every other day does the trick and then I'm set for the rest of the winter. I've got healthy lungs, though, so that probably makes a difference.

I ride a mountain bike around town, but I don't hop curbs and get up on the sidewalk. I don't live in a big city, though, and my town has bike lanes. Also, I never ride at night unless I can't help it. Even with lights bikers are hard to see.

I want to recommend a great alternative to common trips like this, my solution for You - Racing ! Very Happy yeah, racing with the city. Non car had to today a chance with me on lights Twisted Evil of course for a certain distance, till he ménage to put into second.
But racing in city with cars is one thing, and dealing with city as a jungle an managing to get from a to b in shortest and most exiting way is another thing. After such trip I m always almost unconsciousness but it is worth it.

About nigh racing never on the road – to risky , at night I prefer pedestrians areas. Flying between people at night at 40km/h ….. pure pleasure Twisted Evil
The same at winter, but diferent type of weels.

That's my hybrid.
I go 10 miles a day at least 4 times a week.
I quit smoking 3 years ago, and I love feeling my lungs work.

For the night trips, in the countryside part of my way, the experience has shown me that you only need light to see.
However, to be seen, nothing is worth reflector:
I did use my racing bike to go to work for my first tries.
having a red light behind, i was anyways horned by cars for seeing me at the last moment.

now, I use my city bike, which rear light is hardly visible. But cars do not horn anymore. what happened?

here's what happened:
I have rear luggages bags each side of my bike with a white reflector band, and have
a red reflector near my seat. It makes a triangle, so it is visible far away.

moreover the bands define a wide space the cars will not cross, and so the luggage part work also like an "écarteur de danger" (did'n t find a traduction, so i put a picture of and "écarteur de danger"):

I like that idea of extended reflectors.
Thanks

I like cycling because you can travel a pretty large distance in an acceptable time, in contrast with walking, and have contact with the surroundings, like you do not have when driving a car. Therefore I can not understand why people travel so much by car, even for fun! When I am on holiday I use the car to get somewhere far away, but when I have reached the destination I do all exploring and shopping by bike. On the side cycling is cheap and healthy, but that is just some extra advantage and not the main reason for cycling. When we are cycling in Ireland hiring a bike for two weeks is even more expensive than hiring a car, but seeing Ireland by bike is the only proper way even when it is raining a lot. When you are used to all kinds of weather on a bike you do not bother that much and you get much less problems with catching colds, or being sick.
