Stop Smokiing...

viraj
Many of my friends are chain smokers. In course of time almost all of them have started developing problems related to lungs.

I have seen them always talking of quitting the smoking, but, they never did so.

I want this forum to suggest ways how a person can quit smoking. Are their any tested ways to do so. This will indeed help many of our firends viewing this forum.

I think the secret it's in your mind!

You won't stop smoking until you really want it or you get really scared (cancer, heart attack, etc [and even then, in some cases of really addicted they won't stop...]) Exclamation

In my case I disciplined myself and my will defeated my mind/body.
I know some people that used some books to help them, it's the same process I passed but with a physic support. A physic support (a book, gums, nicotine patches) it's important to many people.
There isn't a perfect recipe, until the person want it they won't stop (your friends say that they want to stop but to be truth, probably, they don't really want it. They like to smoke, even today I think how I enjoyed it. For example a coffee with a cigarette or a good wine and a cigarette it tastes really good Exclamation).
I'm a singer, my voice it's really important to me. That was my major motive to stop (my health too, but it wasn't so important Razz), only after some years I will recover my full lung capacity and perfect my timbre Sad
Your friends have to find out a motive to stop aside their health. People don't care too much about their health until they are really bad Razz

A simple example of one motive that some people won't stop: Some times during the day you don't have nothing to do, or you are passing a uncomfortable moment with people and you don't know what to do, what's the simple answer? Smoking a cigarette, yes cigarettes are also "shyness protectors".

I have drank and done alot of other things as well as smoking (still smoking) and it is the most addictive I think of all the things I have done. Don't know if it's in my mind or what , but I've been smoking over 20 years and have been trying to quit for three years to no avail, have tried patch, cold turkey, and gum. All with failed results. So I will be watching this forum to see if anyone can come up with a method they have tried and had success with....

The problem is that Nicotine is an addictive drug so often it takes more than willpower to stop.
I believe that with other drugs such as heroin the doctor will give you a less addictive drug to remove the craving, the problem being, of course, that you will probably become addicted to the new drug. What is needed is something to eat/drink/inject beforehand which makes the process of smoking seem horrible, preferably by making you physically sick or something similar.
If you want to try it by yourself then all I can suggest is to try and associate smoking with something horrible:
For example, every time you smoke a cigarette listen to your least favourite music, or eat something you don't like at the same time. Perhaps stick a pin your hand when you inhale. Must admit I haven't tried it though as I am one of the lucky people who have never started.

Its been my experience that unless someone genuinley wants to quit you can't make them quit. This is the starting point.

Not being a smoker its hard to know what works and what doesn't.

You may try a tour of the cancer wards at a hospital

If you have strong desire you can stop. But many people only talk of quiting and its just that....only talk.

Tip No 1.

Quote:
Idea The most important step to take is the first step --
admitting you have an addiction

When asked why you smoke, you might have said, "I just like to smoke!" or "It's my choice to smoke."
The tobacco companies have promoted the idea that smoking is a matter of personal choice. As I see it, there really isn't as much choice as they have suggested to their customers.

Ask yourself, and be totally honest: Am I addicted to tobacco? Am I truly making a freely made choice when I smoke?

You might consider that you need to have a cigarette. Studies have shown that nicotine addiction is as hard to break as heroin or cocaine addiction.

In Nicotine Anonymous' 12 Step program, which sprang from the venerable Alcoholics Anonymous program, the first step is admitting to yourself, "I'm powerless over tobacco." Making this admission may seem trivial to you, but for many it is a very significant part of completing the journey to becoming a non-smoker.

By telling smokers that smoking is a personal choice, the tobacco industry has helped to keep its customers in denial about the true extent of their addiction. If smoking is a choice, then what's the rush to quit? The tobacco companies have used this spin to help keep millions of customers buying their deadly products.

Admitting that you're smoking more out of addiction than choice will help motivate you to go on to the next steps -- taking control of yourself and becoming a nonsmoker.

This admission will further serve you by helping you stay smokefree later. In the months and years after you quit, when temptations to smoke occasionally overpower you -- and they will -- remind yourself, "I have an addiction and I'm powerless over tobacco." Saying this to yourself in overwhelmed moments of desire will help give you the strength to say no to "just one" cigarette.

If you can make it for just five minutes without giving in, the urge to smoke be controllable or disappear. In this way, you'll be able to stay smokefree for life.

I smoked for a few years but that was 25 years ago. I succeeded about the third time by having an opened packet of cigarettes and another packet of unopen cigars (Cuban) on me all the time without touching them. At first I was worried that I would damage the valuable packets of tobacco while asleep. (I did say I had them on me all the time).
Eventually the packets of tobacco were so crumbled that I could not smoke them even if I wanted to.
I only knew that I had succeeded by destroying the tobacco products without smoking them!

I still remember those 1st Capstan full strength especially the 1st one of the day Laughing

R there any cigrates developed which can help us get rid of smoking....?

I heard about this many years back but doubt of their existance.

Why a company will like to develope a product which is meant for its own extension?

If any one has an idea about these type of products lets share it here so that many of the smokers who will to leave it get benifited from this.

I have heard many friends saying that they can reduce the frequency of smoking but as soon as something unusual happens like tension, party, etc. they get back to routine. Also, some say that it becoming a routine and if they dont get to smoke at right time they become a it lazy and angry...

Gosh this is really dangerous. I think we need to have a fullproof remedy for this.

smoking not only affect the one who smoking but also the people around them and it is much more serious than the smoker. so if you don't love yourself, then it is ok, but if you love your family or people around you, please, don't smoke. that is a way, a slow way u try to kill them.

I'm not really that old, but still many of my friends smoke. It's horrible, makes your teeth yellow, your clothes smell bad and much more. Cancer and other things is almost normal to people that smokes. I have never ever smoked, and I wil try to keep it like that.

My mother smoked before, I can't remember it really, it's so long ago. She tried one of those chewing gums that is supposed to help you to stop smoking. It worked for her, but for many people it's just a waste of time and money.

Me and my fiance used to smoke and so did (and still do) a lot of our family and friends.

It seems to me that some people are different with their smoking. The addiction to smoking for me and my fiance didn't really seem to be so much of a nicotine addiction rather than a comfort. When you smoke the things you do you associate with the smoking. At work you socialise more with people out side on your small breaks. At home you sit outside with a drink an look out, talk and relax... And at the same time you are doing something in small 10min bursts.

When I quit I felt left out of the smoking groups... even tried standing and talking with them but felt left out. I wasn't out there for the same reason. When we went to clubs we were sitting down and drinking and not getting up for smoke breaks so it felt a bit boring... so when we went outside to try and break it up we felt like we needed to finish something... so we would drink faster... funny hu?

After a couple of weeks we lost the association to most things (drinking is a hard one). Just the other day when it rained for the first time since we quite we felt like sparking up because we used to sit outside and watch the rain while having a smoke. But it makes it that much easier to do it when you are doing it with somebody else! I cannot emphasize that enough! especially when other people are still smoking around you!

Now that was mine and my fiances experience with quitting... My fiance always says "I have not quit im just not going to have one"... And I think thats a good way to look at it. Just because your stopping doesn't mean that you can have one one day down the track I guess... the word "Quit" can be a little scary and final to some people. Don't make excuses for yourself like "I will do it after the job interview" because your just not going to have one at the moment... and then when you crave one just hold off...

Now my fiance's sister is a different story... she is currently trying to quit... and it is deadly. One day without one and she will bite your head off! I dont understand that one... I assume thats a chemical addiction requiring patches or something.
web_harman
well what i think of smoking is that it is really a cheap drug addiction and there i snothing much we can do about it...

Strictly speaking... Smoking Kills...one or other way..

Y'day I and my friend were working in the office, after some time of work, my friend who is also a chain smoker asked me to come along with him for a smoke.

While going to the permitted area we had to climd the stairs down, and while going down my friend sliped down and factured his leg.

Truely smoking kills people..

I think this can be a reson to give it away

My doctor told me that if I still continually smoke my life will no longer live so that why I could stopped smoking. And I would like to inform anyone here that smoking is nothing but only waste all of yours.

My friends boyfriend wanted to stop smoking, and he did it in a funny way. He bought a pack of the worst cigarettes he knew, and smoked them all as quick as he could. Of course he was sick afterwards but he doesn’t want to smoke anymore, that is one way.

My younger sister has been smoking for four years, she was 14 when she started, she also wants me to start smoking and drinking like she does.
My co-workers are almost the same, they try to pressure me to start drinking coffee, something I won't start with either.
Paulo_baga
yes no smoking !
bukaida
Well I could not quit smoking but reduced it significantly (from 15-20 per day to 2-3 per day). The method I followed may help others. Whenever I feel to have one, I pick some pieces of salted amla into my mouth(some small sweet candy will also do) and start sucking them(not to be chewed). It realy helps me. Also I donot keep any cigarette with myself, so that in extreme case I have to borrow it from someone which obviously has a little more trouble.Hope that I will be able to quit smoking completely soon. I will be very happy if anyone get benefit from my methods.

Smoking is the most disgusting habit in the world, I can't stand it and don't understand how people don't feel unhealthy or that they are smelling by putting that poison into their body. Yuck. Evil or Very Mad

That's the truth. I was a smoker from age 15 until 2 years ago. I started working out a lot and realized that smoking was really unproductive. I talked to quite a few doctors and professionals and finally one of them told me to do exactly this:

1)count your cigarrettes in the morning every day.
2)never borrow a lighter or cigarrette while you're doing this.
2) every day take 2 out of the pack and save them somewhere. Also set aside the cost of 2 ciggarrettes every day(like 50c or whatever).
3) every 2 weeks smoke 2 less cigarrettes a day.
4) one day you will go somewhere and not care about bringing your lighter with you.(for me it was when I was at about 8 per day smoking). When you forget your lighter you should be done forever.
5) I never smoked after that day and I had a nasty pile of cigarrettes lying around and like 12 bucks change.

Good luck to your friends!

I suggest you walk into section at hospital ward where patients treated coz of smoking. Terrible and made you really want to quit.

I totally agree with most of what's been written so far...

Pick a date. A symbolic date. And plan for it. Get rid of the ashtrays, and plan for what to do when you really crave a smoke with your beer/paper/etc.

Use the stuff to help you: nicotine replacement (patch, gum, etc.) and the pill (including the new champix.) They increase your chances by 9-17%. Use them. You're human.

Remember - reducing to quit is useful. Just reducing is not that useful. Gotta quit to see the benefits.

And after five years of not smoking, you get a lot of lifetime back. Literally.

Anyway they should give up smoking. But I guess it must be very difficult for them to do so. It's said that smoking can make smokers happy and comfortable. My father has tried give up it for several times but at last he lost. A serious illness may be the best thing for them to give up smoking.

You should quit if you whant to live the full extent of your life. Also if you have children, because 2nd hand smoke kills lungs and brain cells to.

Smoking will deliver you a slow painful death. I stopped by starting to smoke some dope and slowly weaning myself from the dope. Havn't touch any for years

In order to stop smoking, you must have a strong motivation and a strong discipline. Also, interest to quit smoking. If you have all of this, then, stopping this vice will be as easy as counting 1 to 3. Just bear in mind that smoking is dangerous for our health.

one thing is most important, if a person wants to quit smoking , he/she will, no matter what someone says will not help as long as the individual wants to quit

smoking sometimes gives you a feeling of giving all your stress out of your body... but not habitualy of course..me i do smoke sometimes especially when i'm with my friends hanging out and having some beers. helps me control myself not to get drunk myself too much. butregular days, i do not smoke... its a matter of control... To those chain smokers, if you want to stop, don;t force it...you need to smoke gradually to stop...litlle by little until no more smoke...

It is not impossible, I did it and I am very, very glad that I did.

Smoking is deadly and horrible, expensive and disgusting. Unfortunately it is addictive.

I just gave up with willpower alone, but the best way to do it is by using Nicotine Replacement Therapy with is far, far, far more safe than smoking - it is the tar from inhaling smoke that kills you, not the nicotine.

There is also a new drug called Varenicline, or Champix, which works very well

http://gosmokefree.nhs.uk/

I think you have to rely on your mind to some extent tho Confused

Good luck, all

Just stop smoking. The physical withdrawal from tobacco lasts about 24 hours, anyone can survive these very short moments of discomfort. After that it is only your own want to keep smoking that will draw you back to cigarettes. I smoked for ten years very heavily, then for 3 years casually and now I have stopped for 2 years and I can never imagine putting one of those revolting things near my body again.
The best help you can get to stop is to read a book by Alan Carr called 'the easy way to stop smoking'.
He is very helpful and it's almost impossible to keep smoking after you have read this book.
Smoking will kill you, it will make your life revolve around a stupid addiction and it is a waste of good money. We could save the world from starvation with the money people spend on killing themselves with cigarettes.
Just Stop!!!

PS all those drugs and patches just keep you addicted to nicotine. There useless and only on the market to make money for big drug companies. You only need to want to stop smoking and then you can - no treatment required.

The thing is that it is the tar in cigarettes that kills you, not the nicotine, so it is far better to wean yourself off cigarettes and keep the nicotine addiction, rather than be addicted to nicotine and be smoking.

Patches and gum are much better alternatives to cigarettes, they can help you give up.
