What do you think abot Russia?

freder
I would like to discuss this topic
What do you know about this country and what do you think about it?
Have you ever been in Russia or have you ever visited russian websites at least ('ru' domain)?
The rumors has it that people from USA and Europe have a lot of prejudices and biased opinions? Is it true?

I dunno, maybe we can start with what you think of Russia? I personally don't watch the news too much, but from what I can get, Bush sometimes gets sore at Putin for "curbing democracy" by censorship, etc.

Though except for the vodka thing, I don't know what other stereotypes Westerners have of Russians.
Sarcas
Pretty much nothing , except for the bombing now and then you don't get to know a lot about Russia from here, so there's little need for me to prejudice aboutu Russia
Yea except for the fact that they lag the shi- on the internet, which is where we base some of our jokes on though. But that's about everything

I dont like that country too much. They are one major corrupt country and make weapons for terrorists. They think they can take law into their own hand.

They have not changed one bit. They are still the same as they used to be when they were making nukes.

Russia, well, I certainly don't know much about the country. But I've come to like it a little lately, especially because of the astounding PSP hacking Russian team that allowed me and a million of gamers to run homebrew-developped applications.

Hmm, Russia seems too large on the map, too large for its leaders to get dumb enough to sell Alaska.

I like the vodka.

Hello all!

Well Russia hmm.. I was born there and my native language is Russian Shocked
I know of course many things about Russia, but I always prefear the ''Ex-URSS'' compared to what russia becomed now.

Before, at the communist era, the URSS was the most powerful country and now, it degenerated so much.

I moved from there now live in the other continent...

I doubt that many peoples has visited .ru web sites, because they can't understand unless they learned russian or are russian themselves...

Russian web sites has many stuffs on them... Generally if u want to find something and can't find anything on english web sites or french, russian ones must have them...

About the prejudice part, I have no idea... it depends on the peoples and what their parents theach them. The first vision they got of Russians is generally the one struck in their head...

lol, me too.

I really don't have any feelings one way or the other about Russia, to be honest. They are people just like everyone else, everywhere else.

It's a funny thing, how everyone wants to know what others think of their country, since usually, others go by stereotypes your country has, on a side note, the best thing about Mexico is tacos, and Italy is awesome because of their great pasta dishes.

Coming from a Russian family, but living my entire life in Australia, makes me feel like I'm about to puke when I think of Russian food, so that's out of the question here.

I do however like things such as ice skating that they have and other such past times, but I dislike how corrupt the government seems to be, and I simply have a bad feel about the country, but did I ever say that I had been their?

No. I'm sure to people that live there, they might know that the so called "corruption" doesn't exist and that all of us aliens (In the old sense Razz) know nothing of their culture and therefor have no right to reserve opinions, as this thread is asking what we think of them, it may as well be asking what we know of them, and not much modern Russian culture would be revealed, beneath a flood of vodka related messages.

As this is an awfully long post to a topic that will surely be closed, and rightfully so, I will end here, but I encourage all to take a look at what you know about said countries, and keep your judgement until you know a bit more.

Tell me which is worse - making weapons for terrorists (?) or creating terrorists?

- Anna Kournikova (drool!)

- Mostovoi

- Putin (respect. no matter what his internal policies are, i respect his international stand.)

- pray for speedy solution of the Chechen crisis.

- Gary Kasparov

- Russian hackers & .ru sites (respect)

After debating with myself whether or not this should be closed, I've decided to move it to the Travel & Countries forum.

As for Russia, I really don't know much about it. I believe it's really cold, and crime rates are quite high.

Is it generally a not very safe place to live in?
How easy is it to get a gun?
palavra
it is growing its old power day bay day.But this does not make me anxious.
i think after the communism hell, russian people will be more reasonable.

- i want to visit russia.(5-6 years ago i studyed a little bit russian too.)

60 minutes did a story on Garry Kosterov tonight.
Basically it was how the only TV channel is government controlled and does not allow any dissent to be aired.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/09/21/60minutes/main3286155.shtml

The Russian intelligence operatives being poisoned by radioactive nuclides.

The corruption.

I would not care to visit there at all.

The only thing Russians can do good is drink a vodka. Too much. I don't understand them. Why they like it so much?
Molle
People like different things. Maybe you like rock, and they like pop. (Just an example.) If they like vodka, let them. I think it's fine. Wink

Russia seems like a poor, cold and quite boring country. I guess there is a lot of things you can do there, but I haven't seen anything of it.

Have you forgotten their aircraft?
The Russian Air Force is still one of the best in the world, and the military jets they make are still the rulers of the sky. At least that's what my close friends who are aeroplane/jet enthusiasts tell me.
