Redirection code for deleted URL...

georgekalathil
hey anybody out there who could solve my problem...Actually I have a page inside may site and its path is http://www.mysite.com/hessite.html
Here I want to change the file name from hessite.html to hissite.html..
Obviously we also have to delete the old url from the net, and upload the new..

But the problem is that my old url is having a high search engine visibility, and once it is deleted, the new page would not get that much of searchability. So whenever a person search for the particular keyword, my old url will appear on the result page, even though that file does not exist. So I would like to redirect that old url to my new url, when a person clicks on that link. I have heard that we must place the redirection code in the htaccess file. Can anybody tell me how we can put the code and also plz specify the sytax of the code

Okay, I think I know what you are asking.

Code:
<META HTTP-EQUIV=REFRESH CONTENT="2;URL=http://www.yoursite.com/hissite.html">

This script goes in the header of the page, and it will re-direct to the new page you want.
CONTENT="2; means the # of seconds to wait. 2 is two seconds etc.

As for syntax I have no clue what you mean...

Hope this helps Wink

Very simply put this into your .htaccess
Code:
 redirect 301 hessite.html http://www.mysite.com/hissite.html

But when I put this code for the first url, it worked. But when i added another URL for redirection, it doesnt seems to be working, except for the first one. After that i deleted the htaccess file, but still the redirection for the first url was working. I cannot understand this dillemma. ...any suggestions......

Hello,

I'm not sure to understand...
There can only be one "general" (all user agents) redirect for a given page in the htaccess file.
