Hosting MediaWiki tutoral site

Hi,

Iam thinking of creating a website to post a comprehensive tutorial on how to setup and administer mediawiki.

I was given a job to create a wiki site for teams use which should be hosted on company's intranet.
Ihad to do a lot of googling to find the relevant matter.

So now that i've figured it out, iam thinking of posting the steps so that others should not face the same problem

Does anyone know of a similar site because i don't want to reinvent the wheel...

or do u think this is a good idea... pls reply...

thanks

I couldn't understand...
Media Wiki "read me" file would explain about setting and installation of MediaWiki...
also, http://www.mediawiki.org/ explains all about media wiki..

But Anyway, its a good idea.. to create a administer guide for Company Intranet.. that makes mediawiki more prominent..

Also... the tutorial can be written with in the wiki itself... Smile

Actually i did'nt found the steps on mediawiki site too helpful.

There are many setting and tweaks for php, apache and mysql installation that are specific to wiki.
If a user is new to these software, then he is in complete mess!!!

As for creating a wiki for hosting the tutorial, i was also thinking on the same lines...

few days back i too tried mediawiki on my home pc. I think its not difficult to install and configure. (May be a lot of people find it difficult.)

Well it is the best what can i do

Dont add the word free in the end or something similar. "MediaWiki Tutorials" is the best pharase to search free tutorials in the below search pages.

Is it possible to setup MediaWiki on frihost?

I use MediaWiki at work all the time and I really miss it at home.

I suppose if it doesn't support it I can write some script to convert it into plain html when I make changes.

Yes, mediaWiki would work on Frihost.

I set one up last Spring for a project. Seemed to work fine to me.

Server 2 has since upgraded to PHP 5, so that might be the only stumbling block - but I doubt it's a problem.

As for the tutorial site, not a bad idea. The docs seemed pretty exhaustive to me, but like you said it's all technical... so aim the tutorial at novice users who don't have a lot of php/mysql background. It might also be helpful to use some screencapture videos, so that people can physically see the process (try using Wink to turn these screencaps into flash videos).

That's one of the problems with a lot of open source projects like mediawiki - the docs seem to be aimed more at experienced users and potential developers. In their efforts to include all the pertinent information, they can lose the average end-user.
