phpbb2 Vs phpbb3

I happened to read the tutorial by mathiaus about adding forum to direct domain provided by frihost. As mentioned in the tutorial i made a visit to http://www.phpb.com .There in the download section of that site i saw two types for downloading called phpb2 and phpb3.Simply as 3 is more than 2 i assume that phpbb3 will be more cool and advanced in both its appearances and functions. But i "think" its still in the BETA version. And i read somewhere in a site that phpbb3 is more advenced and rich in features.
So will it be wise to install phpb3 platform into the direct domain.?Will that be possible?Does the direct domain support phpb3?
Can anyone point out some forums hosted on a phpb3 platform,if there are any(because whichever forums i see are on phpb2 platform)?
Bondings
Phpbb3 is still in BETA, although most likely not for long as they already released RC4 (release candidate 4) a bit less than a month ago.

And yes phpbb3 has much more features and a lot more improvements compared to phpbb2, so yes it would be better to use it for new installations. And yes it should work fine on our servers. However, as I mentioned, it's still in beta and hence may still have some problems.
Bockman
Just a heads up.

It's not really BETA stage (Release Candidate (RC) <> BETA).

Being in RC stage, phpBB3 installatons WILL have support and updates available, which means you will be able to patch your new forum as upgrades arrive. This will alow you to upgrade to final release when they release it.
It is not yet fully tested but (as they say themselves) it's near final stage (on their site you can read that RC 4 is meant to be the final release if no major bugs are found).

Be Well Cool

You said it is still in beta and hence may still have some problems...Can you point out some sort of problems that might happen..?

About the phpbb3 thing like both bockman and bondings said its not on an offical release. There may still be bugs in phpbb3. In fact I believe that there will be an RC5 still because of a bug. I suggest not using it in a live envirnment though even the people at phpbb.com trust it so it has to be safe.

I recommend phpbb3 with its appealing visual effects and fast support response already, even before the final is released, the betas are a bit risky to run live, but RC5 is completely safe.. it a better choice over phpbb2 which is slow, crappy, and looks ugly.

Ya I have been messing with 3 for a little while now and it is definitely better than 2.

Visual Effects are a trade of the browser. You could almost certainly make phpBB2 look like phpBB3 provided that no new client-side features were added.

I would definately reccomend 3 over 2. There are so many issues with to I would sooner impale my head than install another phpBB2 with all the mods to make it a decent, spamproof system. There is only one thing that phpBB2 has a leg up over it's competitors and that is CashMod but other than that the whole thing is a deprecated hunk of junk that any other forum system could surpass in their sleep. The thing doesn't even have check boxes to remove the tons of spambot accounts it breeds - you have to manually weed them out slowly with the ACP, or have to go through confirmation screens and individual deletions just about as bad as manually weeding them out. The default CAPTCHA is absolutely poor (and never fixed), and subSilver has such terrible HTML and CSS techniques it makes me want to hurl when I was trying to make a decent replacement for a website.

If you get the userlist mod for phpBB2 you do have check boxes that can be used for deleting members. There are plenty of mods that fix the CAPTCHA thing. The only thing I can really say about the poor css and html coding in subSilver is don't use subSilver. Use something different. Base your style off of something different. phpBB is unique in that it gives you options not only that, but it gives you all the options. You can view any code you want because its open source and therefore make anything you want out of it. I have a very nice site running that not only uses phpBB but uses it for the main site as well as the forum.
