I remember I was running windows xp Media centre edition once upon a time, and it came with a niftly little program that would allow me to convert wav to mp3 files.

now that I have windows vista ultimate, I cant seem to find that program anymore. Any suggestions on a free wav to mp3 file conversion program? Or anybody know what happened to the program that came with media centre edition?

You could use audacity:

To export mp3's you will need the LAME plug-in (page explains everything):

Beware that there's a great difference in the mp3 sound quality existing between the various available conversion programs on the market.

converting a wav file to mp3 isnt such a good idea. u cant compromise on the quality. i doubt converting a wav file can have that mp3 sound.

An mp3 will always lack some "data" when converted from a wav file,
but generally, and from my experience, the results can sound so much better
when using a "professional" program for doing the task, rather than yet another "hobbyist"
conversion program...
