So uhm... Hello people, I'm Elm-... Emmer-Compascuum and... "Hi, I'm new".

When I'm not busy building websites (which I never finish), drawing silly stuff (instead of doing my homework), learning how to hold a pen correctly (I still don't do it right after fifteen years of quality time of writing and drawing), or trying to learn programming languages (emphasis on 'trying') I'm busy with a useless activity called school: spending the day studying books about Thales' theorem, endoplasmatic reticula and the laws of physics.

Ahw, and I use brackets too often, but I think you noticed that by now. Let's see... Did I forget anything? ... Ah, the part which is a bit more useful to know. My skills range from XHTML Strict and CSS to a crappy beginner's level of PHP. I've got almost everything now to make reasonable websites. All I need now is 'Photoshop' skill. (Surely it can't be that everyone uses Photoshop? It even costs more than a brand new desktop computer...)

Anyway, in one week the holidays end for me and I'll be working on what will be my last year of high school (that is, if I don't screw up Pray). The last year involves me doing some sort of research (whether it be by means of experiments or calculations) in a group with one or two more students. To improve communication while working on such projects, an own website with a forum might be useful, aaand... That's what connects the time you've wasted by reading all that text to Frihost...

Hello, Frihost community! *waves*

Thanks for wasting my time Very Happy ...

Not really, I also do the same things as you: School, Drawing, Programming. But I DO my homework.

If you want something cheaper than Photoshop. (ACTUALLY FREE!) Use GIMP! www.gimp.org I use it myself (I'm not so good though Sad ). Examples of what I've made: http://catscratches.deviantart.com .

If you think programming languages is too hard for you, you can use Game Maker(www.gamemaker.nl), it's free in trial version and you can do many basic things with it and then advance! It's a really good start in programming. The language is OOP (object-orienteered programming) but there's also D&D (drag & drop). It's a good start to learn and then advance to use the scripting language (GML). Then you can advance to eg. C++ together with Irrlicht. A free 3D engine. (http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net).

If you want to learn better PHP, W3Schools (www.w3schools.com) has a very good tutorial and reference.

As you might notice, I also LOVE brackets.

You're welcome =P.

Well, I tried GIMP. I even have it installed right now, but the loading time is awful... (don't know if it's the hardware or the software which causes that).

Well, and the programming stuff... Most tutorials on the internet explain it in such boring ways, that I'd rather do something else. For PHP I'm using this tutorial, which is pretty nice. I also bought a book about PHP today, for more extensive explanations.

Game Maker seems to be a nice next step when I'm done (sufficiently Shhh) mastering PHP. I just wouldn't know what to make then. d'oh!

Since it's developed for Linux, the Windows version loads slow. The linux version loads much faster for me. Also, it loads faster on this computer (the slow bad laptop) than on the other computer (the fast great PC). I guess it has to do with the fonts, since we have very many fonts on the other computer but just few on this one. It is the loading fonts stage that takes the most time for me. But I think the loading time is all ok. I mostly use it when making the images I have on deviantArt sitting awake all night and then some seconds less or more doesn't really matter XP).

I also think like you. But to my surprise, the W3School tutorials are GREAT! You advance really fast on them. The only problem is that for a complete beginner, it might be too fast. But since they're advancing so fast and you're learning new stuff all the time (unlike my 1169 page C++ book, gaah -.-) it doesn't get boring.

No problem, don't think of making a complete game in the beginning. Just edit the examples coming with it and try to understand them. Then after a while, you're ready to start game making.
guissmo
I got tired with Game Maker eversince it went to that games thing company. But I use it occassionally though when I'm bored.
