Most Memorable Sports Moment

Afaceinthematrix
What do you consider the most memorable sports moment ever? And why was it so memorable?
SlowWalkere
This is going to depend a lot on what sport you like, what time you like, and whatnot...

For me personally, it would probably be when the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994. It was a long time coming, and from the looks of things it may be a long time coming again. But if you're not a hockey fan, or not a Rangers fan, you probably don't care that much about this.

For something a bit more broad, I'd vote for the homerun race in 1998. With Sosa and McGwire both marching toward Marris' homerun record, and eventally cracking it, it was one of the most exciting sesaons of baseball in years. It was hyped it, it had competition (between two active players), and at the time it wasn't tainted by discussions of steroids (like Bonds' new record). Whenever a longstanding record is beaten, it's something memorable... and this is a good example.

Those are good examples... some of the most memorable moments for me are:

That hit that Reggie Bush took last year... he got laid out!

Also the year when the Angels won the world series.... it was probably the one and only time for a long time....

And at Wrestlemania 12 in 1996 when Shawn Michaels entered the ring on zip line...

Also, Ricardo did well in the European semifinal (Portugal vs England) (defended a penalty + one goal).

A few of my personal "most memorable" sports moments:

The Chicago Bears winning the Super Bowl in 1986 - I still have the game on tape.

Greg Norman blowing a six shot final round lead to give Nick Faldo his 3rd Masters title in 1996

2003 - Steve Bartman interfering with Moises Alou (probably) costing the Cubs their first trip to the world series since 1945.

The US Ryder Cup team with the miracle comeback to win in 1999 in Massachusetts

Oh, and I almost forgot the #1 all-time most merorable, not only for me, but for most American sports fans over the age of 30 - The US Hockey team winning the gold medal in 1980 beating the Russians (then the USSR) and then Finland. The "Miracle on Ice"

In my opinion, it's Michael Jordans last shot VS Jazz.

I have two:

1 - Australia qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1974 against Uruguay in a penalty shootout. I was watching the game at our University Bar and everyone just went off when Aloisi put away the shot in the back of the net. It was an amazing experience and so wonderful!

2 - The 1997 ARL grand final between Newcastle and Manly. The game was tied in the last minutes of the game and it had come to the last few seconds of the game, Andrew Johns had kicked for a field goal but missed it, hitting the cross bar and ending back in the Knights hands. After another tackle, Joey passed it onto Darren Albert, who drove through a gap to score the game winning try and securing the Knights' first premiership. The whole area was celebrating for days!

I have both of them on DVD, and I can watch them over and over again. Wink

LANCE!
I can't image the record of 7 TDF wins ever being beaten.

The most memorable moment in Sports history for me would be Man Utd's comeback against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in 1999. In the last 5 minutes, they stole it away from Bayern!

Have to agree with you there AVG - it was an awesome game. I was only just starting to like football at that time (I think it was the first season I had spent following the results, etc.) and I remember watching the match on TV. And I nearly went to bed (I was about 10 at the time) and then decided not to. And then Sheringham scored and my step-dad went mad, running round the room, and he was like 'Great stuff, extra time here we come!'. Then two minutes later Solskjaer got the winner and he almost literally hit the roof.

I'll never forget that match, it was an absolute classic. Much better than Liverpool's comeback against Milan 2 years ago.

Also, I wasn't there personally (lol) but the 1966 World Cup final must come close to the greatest sporting moment ever - at least in this country.

Most memorable for me is MJ's game winner in 98. But, being a Laker fan, I loved Derek Fisher's .4 second shot. I'm so glad we signed him back

Wait ... there is still time Laughing

There are a lot of great memorable moments in all sports, but I consider one of the best, the first 10 in a gymnastic competition by Nadia Comaneci.

Oh, forgot about Kasparov's domination in chess '80s-'90s Smile

Some of my most memorable sports moments are:

The comeback that Liverpool had versus AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League. Down 3-0 at the end of the first half, in most cases, the match is over. But coming out in the second half, they were a completely different side. With the first goal by Steven Gerrard's header, it seemed to ignite the team. I'll admit one of the goals they scored, a player was offsides, Laughing but since I'm a Liverpool fan I didn't mind. Their goalie who had been atrocious in the first half came into a zone and essentially blocked everything that came his way.

I also remember Steve Bartman costing the Cubs a chance to win the World Series. That moment sparked a comeback of epic proportions to me and gave my favorite baseball team the Florida Marlins the chance to go to the World Series where they beat the New York Yankees.

Another great moment was the 2007 Fiesta Bowl where Boise State pulled out three trick plays to tie and then win the game. I always cheer for the underdog where I don't have a team in the fight.

Tony Lockett kicking his 1400th Goal in the AFL (First player ever to do so)
Shane Warne's hattrick at the MCG in 1994 (i think)
Robert Harvey winning back to back brownlow medals in 1997 and 1998
Pistons winning the 2004 Title
Phil Mickelson winning his first major, go lefties Wink

For me it has to be Kirk Gibson's home run off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series (Baseball). That makes every Dodger fan's heart beat with pride.

I also really liked the 1997, 2002 and 2003 world series. The Marlins won it all in 97 and 03 and the Angels won for the first time in 02. Those all were wonderful memories.

I definitely agree with this one. It has been a little tainted since it happened but at the time there was nothing bigger and it was very exciting to watch. Another baseball moment was the 2001 world series when the Dbacks beat the Yankees in game 7. I loved watching the Yankees go down. Also 1992, Joe Carters world series winning home run off of Mitch Williams, you couldn't ask for a more dramatic finish.

There is ,any more but just can't think of them right now
