Symbolic Links...... Need HELP

I am currently setting up a small web server from home, i've got Apache, MySQL, PHP, PERL, all working well my question is this i want to create a symbolic link to the main CGI-BIN whic i have done using the 'ln -s' command via SSH in linux.
No problem with this the symlink appears fine when i SSH to the server but when i FTP to the server into the same folder which i created the symlink the symlink doesn't show? My ftp client is gFTP (gnome's ftp client)
i'm not to sure what is going on but would appriciate anyones input on solving this little problem

Where did you put that symlink and where does it point to?
Where are your CGI stuff?
What do you want to accomplish by adding this symlink?

Maybe the settings in the FTP server don't allow you to follow symlinks. Check for that too.

I have my own problem with symlinks, I know how to create through the GUI, but I would like to create symlinks through the console.
