Premiership 2007/2008 My Thoughts

truespeed
With a lot of clubs spending a lot of money in the summer,it should be harder to predict who finishes where, but i cant see the top four being any different to the top four of the last 3 years.

My Predictions

1st: Manchester United
Man utd have spent more more than any other club in the summer, with the signings of,nani, hargreaves, anderson and teves, the jury is still out on wether teves and rooney can play together, but even if they are too similar united have other options, Nani and anderson are an unknown quantity to me as ive never seen them play, but they will have to be something special to justify their transfer fees.

For me they’re best transfer of the summer was hargreaves,he could be the missing link in europe that turns them from nearly men to winners.

……………

2nd: Arsenal
Everyone seems to be writing arsenal off since the sale of Henry, but what they have is a good young and talented, and more importantly ambitious crop of players. They are the best footballing side in the league, and if they can add consistency to their play they can achieve anything.

…………..

3rd: Chelsea
With the African nations cup in January, and with Chelsea losing the likes of Drogba,Mikel,Essien and Kalou,i think Chelsea will miss out on points around this period,so i am picking them for 3rd spot.
………….

4th: Liverpool

Liverpool have made a lot of changes in the summer, although it could be argued they have increased the quality in the squad, just the shear numbers of comings and goings will mean it will take a while for them to blend and bed in,its for this reason im putting them in fourth spot.

…………..

5th: Spurs
They continue to buy the cream of the best young british talent with the purchases of darren bent and gareth bale. Over the past couple of years they have been the nearly club, finishing 5th both times and just missing out on a champions league place,a lot of people are tipping them to creep into the top 4 this year, but i think they will just miss out again.

…………………

6th: Newcastle
Newcastle have arguably the best quartet of strikers in the league, with Owen,Viduka,Smith and Martins, big sam is spoilt for choice up front, now if only they can sort out their defence they could be in for a big season.

…………………..

7th: West Ham

West ham have brought lots of new players in since the arrival of Alan Curbishley last christmas, and have now got a high quality squad, wether he can merge them into a high quality team is yet uncertain, but with Dean ashton back to fitness and with the recent additions of craig bellamy and scott parker, the future looks bright for the hammers.

…………….

8th: Blackburn

Mark Hughes teams are notoriously hard to beat, they dont have the quality of other teams with more spending power, but hughes organizes them well, and if they can keep hold of Benny McCarthy, they could be in for a top 10 finish.

…………..

9th: Aston Villa

I dont think Villa have the greatest squad, but like Hughes at Blackburn,O;Neill is a great motivator,he had an ok first season at villa, and i predict another mid table finish.

…………………..

10th: Portsmouth

Probably harrys best buy of the summer was getting Distin from Man City on a free,i think pompey will play some good football without ever really threatening the top 6 places, and finish mid table.

11th: Everton

I think everton over achieved last year, and with other clubs around them adding significantly to their squads,i think everton may get left behind a little, they are still a hard team to beat though,so i dont think they will struggle, but i think it will be a finish outside of the top 10 for them.

…………….

12th: Manchester City

Svens first season in charge in the premiership could be a rocky one,he has bought virtually a new team, and he needs to get them playing as a team as soon as possible,as a slow start could see them in trouble early on,i expect them to pick up though and to finish safely.

…………………

13th: Sunderland

Roy hasn’t bought any big name players, but as a manager he will instill in his players the same desire to win that he had as a player, and that desire should keep them safe in their first season back in the premiership.

…………………..

14th: Reading

I think it will be second season syndrome for reading, and with the loss of sidwell to Chelsea,i think they will struggle,i dont think they will get relegated, but they will flirt with it a little.

…………………..

15th: Bolton

With big Sams departure to tyneside, and little Sam taking over,i think the momentum that took them into top 6 finishes season after season has been lost,i think they will find it hard this year, and if they are in trouble around christmas time,Anelka wont want to be around,so it will be a season of transition, but i think they will survive.

………………

16th: Middlesborough
Southgate in his second season will be hoping to improve on last years efforts, but i cant see it happening, with Viduka their main supply of goals off to Newcastle, its not looking good for boro.

……………………

17th: Fulham

Sanchez has bought in a few players over the summer,he has gambled on a few of his Irish players including David Healy,if it pays off they should be safe.

…………………

18th: Wigan
They only just survived relegation on the last day of last season, but i think time is up for Wigan, they have made some good signings in,Brown,Koumas and Bramble,i just dont think they have enough overall quality to survive.

…………………..

19th: Birmingham
I like Steve Bruce, but looking at his squad, theres nothing there that makes me think that it will result in anything other than a quick return to the championship.

………………

20th: Derby
This years Watford, will play well in games,be called unlucky, losing to the odd goal, but will be relegated by april.

In my opinion, you're right. But, in some places, I would disagree with you:

1. Manchester United - They're just too good.

2. Liverpool - Don't think Arsenal have what it takes to break into the Top 2 just yet; Liverpool have made some promising new signings

3. Chelsea - The African Cup of Nations shall be their worst disadvantage besides injuries and fitness problems.

4. Arsenal - They shall just barely qualify for the Champions League

5. Spurs - In a couple of seasons, they'll break into the Top 4. They have the best young English players. One thing's for sure: they're better than all the other teams in the Premiership but yet, not as good as the Top 4.

6. Newcastle - Sam's taking them up. Though, Owen may not be a vital factor. It's Martins who'll get them goals.

7. West Ham - They're going for Europe this time.

8. Blackburn - I think that Intertoto is where they may be going again.

9. Everton - They shall finish higher than Aston Villa and Portsmouth for sure.

10. Portsmouth - They're just barely going to stay in the Top 10.

11. Aston Villa - They shall improve in quality this season.

12. Man City - Their new signings shall be a flop.

13. Sunderland - Keane's keeping them in the Premiership for sure.

14. Reading - They'll be going back down next season. But, for now, they're staying up.

15. Bolton - The latter half of the previous season was terrible for them. I don't think that their future is bright.

16. Birmingham - I think that they'll just barely stay up this time.

17. Middlesborough - They shall just manage to stay in the top flight.

18. Fulham - It's time for Fulham to go.

19. Wigan - They're geting relegated for sure. Titus Bramble was a horrible signing.

20. Derby - Yup, this year's Watford.

Here are the '07 / '08 predictions from me (top 4).

1st: Manchester United - Manchester Utd have bought four new talents, who will provide some strength for the club. The combination of Rooney and Tevez might not work so well, but there are some other strikers to take that position. There is a mixture of youth and experience in the club that will always go down well. And with little injuries at the moment, this should be United's season.

2nd: Arsenal - A lot of people have suspected that Arsenal will be a failure this season, and might not even qualify for Europe. But I think they have got a lot of tricks up their sleeve. Some top talents have left the club this summer, but I think it could be for the best. If all the players can perform well through-out the season, Arsenal should be well up there.

3rd: Liverpool - Liverpool only seem to do well in Europe. However, they have spent quite a bit of money this summer. With Fernando Torres on the club, they will provide plenty of goals against any opposition. But it probably won't be enough to take on Arsenal or United.

4th: Chelsea - Despite being huge spenders, Chelsea are a bad team. Let's face it. Without having a multi-millionaire owner they wouldn't be half as far as they have been. With no big summer transfers for Chelsea, I don't think they will pose a decent threat to the top two teams anyway.
Ucbet
Everyone here has rated city outside the top 10, but I think with that kind of performance yesterday they deserve to be in the top 10. Eriksson has made good signings over the summer. Micah Richards is always as impressive as he could be. Elano looked to be a hit too.
_AVG_
Well, if you ask me, Newcastle looked absolutely superb. They completely flattened Bolton. Spurs played terribly by the way.
cosmicx
yeah, I believe that Eriksson can lead Manchester City to a better position in this season...
Manchester Utd just managed to draw with Readings in their first match, and yet Rooney was injured...
Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea each successfully grabbed 3 points from their opponent...
Octaeder
Just as well United spent a shedload of money, with Rooney now being injured for the next few months.

I think we'll see manchestter united continue to maintain a strong presence in the premiership, but focus a little harder on taking home a trophy this season.

Aresenal are about due a resurgence. They've had a ropey season or two but they've never been a team to let that defeat them, and they should start to fight back now. That's where I think the real Premiership battle will be hapening, between Aresenal, Chelsea and Liverpool for the places 2-4

I could be wrong, but I think as long as Man U can avoid losing points in the scrappy games like the North West derbys then they should really walk the Premiership... Maybe only by 3-6 points, but the quality in the league is that much raised that I can't see a clear out and out winner being established.
jipmerite
Wow. I can't believe you guys are predicting the places for all the teams in the league. I would have expected a prediction of the top 5 and bottom 5... but each and every club!! wow... Shocked

I am not such a pundit to make such predictions. But I do expect Man United to be pretty strong. And I also expect Arsenal to under perform again. I like Arsenal and would like to see the do well. Regardless of the rest of the squad, the Henry will surely be missed.

I am also looking forward to seeing how Man City will do with Eriksson as the coach. Got high expectations for them now.
_AVG_
Well, as far as Spurs are concerned, they've had a horrible start. Now, the question arises :

CAN THEY QUALIFY FOR EUROPE?

I mean, people were saying that they would displace Arsenal in the Top 4 but their position in the Top 10 is doubtful I think.

I think spurs started slowly last year,in fact if i remember right, they only claimed the 5th place position in the last couple of weeks of the season,i cant believe they will finish outside the top 10 this year.

Top 4 looks unlikely though, away to sunderland and home to everton, are games they should be winning if they have any ambition of champions league football.
cosmicx
Spurs does not start their game nicely...
They lost to Sunderland and now Everton, much more efforts are needed...
but I believe they can stay in the top 10 even though the terrible starting...
poly
You thought about it a lot I guess.. well you never know but I d say chelsea gets at least second..

Well, I saw last night's games and well, there are 2 things which I noticed:

Spurs are back! 4-0 over Derby.

Bolton are in deep deep trouble after losing again in a much more competitive Premiership.

I think we all predicted bolton to struggle this season, sammy lee is now favourite with the bookies to be the first manager to get the sack this season.

Sam Allardyce left Bolton and maybe the team is not yet adapted with the new manager. Very Happy

Its one of the toughest years to call I think, Liverpool look very strong in areas maybe they have lacked in the past, and I think they may break not that top two, Man Utd rocky start could cost them, and although going well at the moment, I think Man City are looking for a UEFA place, Arsenal look a bit lackless at the moment, and Newcastle and Spurs don't have the consistancy for me to challenge that top 3. Chelsea have the squad, missing players in the summer with replacements like Ballack & Shev's to come back to the squad, i don't think wil be a problem. Releagation i am guessing is Derby for sure, Birmingham may hang on, time for Fulham to go. Wigan may suprise teams i think its another season for them to survive with money in the bank. Sunderland may not have bought enough to avoid relegation, and we have yet to see the heat on Keano. My prediction is :
---------------------
1.Chelsea
2.Liverpool
3.Man Utd
---------------------
18. Sunderland
19. Fulham
20. Derby

Don't want to be harsh, but I don't think they have the right manager for that squad, and if they keep him, and lose Anelka in the next month then they are goign to be fightly like mad to stay up, keep anelka and change the managment setup, they could get back to mid-table.
One other point, i fancy Portsmouth to make UEFA this year too, there team is more and more exciting as seasons go on under Redknapp and Adams incharge

Well surely if Spurs now cant make top 5, neither can Man Utd, and you would be a mad man to take that bet surely?

Man Utd have gotta do something fast or else they may not end up in the Champions League. The way they're going ... too dependant on Ronaldo and Rooney. Anyway, it's still a bit too early so let's hope for the best. I trust Fergie will get United out of this mess.

Woah man! Hold your horses there! As I recall England has most Champions League qualifications of Europe so why would Man Utd be unable to play Champions League? The season is only just started anything can happen..
cosmicx
I am agreed that Derby will be relegated this season, their team is not up to that standard yet...
Maybe now is still too early to judge, hopefully, we can see a better team soon...
For Man Utd, their start is not going on smoothly, but I think the situation would change when Ronaldo and Rooney return. Cool

Well, finally, Manchester United have a first win. Now, well, as things seem to be going ... Manchester United will have to win many games and hope that Chelsea drop points. They are 5 points behind Chelsea and so early, that doesn't look good. One vital thing in the Premiership will be consistency and the results against the Top 4. Man Utd have gotta beat Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool this season. They have to win against them if they want to win the league as, the way it seems to be going, it's really going to be close this season. All results shall count.

And about the Champions League, my wrong. Rolling Eyes
aster
my opinion:

1. Chelsea thought just few new palyers, and lots of new problems. But the "M" has make great sucsees against "Ab", so chelsea will be much more powerful than last season.

2. Liverpool It has been three years with dispoint to liverpool fans, so "ben" realized that the league is much more important this season, he need not to prove his magic in champion league any more.

3. Manchester United great hope, great dispoint, i think so. Giggs and scohls one more aged^ nany and anderson too younger.

4. Arsenal the king's gone, this is enough.

5. Man City New "Sven", it is enough too.

6. Portsmouth they has make great progress last two years, it is time to pay more attention to them instead of spurs now.

7. Spurs

while, i don't think i can give you absolute reason below.

8. Everton

9. Blackburn -

10. Portsmouth -

11. Aston Villa -

12. Newcastle

13. Sunderland -.

14. Reading - .

15. Bolton -

16. Birmingham

17. Middlesborough -

18. Fulham -

19. Wigan - .

20. Derby -

Have chelsea blown it already with a defeat last weekend?
_AVG_
Yeah, at the moment, Chelsea and Man Utd are not looking convincing at all. In fact, Arsenal and Liverpool are looking a lot better. Especially Liverpool, 6-0 over derby. They have some really great players : Babel, Torres, Voronin.
truespeed
It seems we all pretty much got the top four if not in the right order,on some we are all way off the mark with both newcastle and spurs outside the top 10.
cosmicx
yeah...MU and Chelsea are now fighting hard to win the title...
both Arsenal and Liverpool have actually fixed with their position...
Wenger would like to give more chances for the youngsters to play in the field and show their talent...
Is quite pity for them as they once stayed on as the top team in the league for a long time...

MU has a better chance compared to Chelsea but recently their bad display has turned the situation..
now, both team still have two more matches to go...
haha, hopefully MU can win the title Smile

As a Liverpool fans, it is pretty good that we secured the 4th spot and continue growing from it...
For Derby, they are destined to be relegated...
Now, all the teams are fighting hard from the relegation...
hopefully, we can see some good matches in the remaining matches...
