Livejournal (Drama)

Is anybody here on LJ?

And even if you're not, has anybody else been paying attention to the huge drama that's being caused by fandom vs them because of shifty TOS? It's basically resulting in what could be a mass fan-exodus from the site, so it's big news. LJ has been the main fandom community webpage since FF.net removed all NC-17 content... back whenever it was.... so if there's an actual shift it will be big fandom-news. :x

SO basically people (well a bunch of them) have stopped using LJ because of a mix up with rules etc?

Thousands of fandom people are leaving LJ because they're starting a super sketchy policy that they won't clarify regarding adult material (ie porn) involving anyone under 18. The main problem is that a BNFanartist was permanently banned with no notice for posting Harry Potter fanart.

Even yaoi!gallery bans members who turn out to be under 18 now.

Actually, your thread feels a little sketchy too >_< Are the fans leaving cos they're underaged and can't get pr0n, or are they leaving cos they cant post fanarts? >_>

It's not that they're banning any members under 18-- that would be a very bad idea, as it's very, very far from an adult website.

Fans are leaving because some of the ways LJ has stated things makes it seem like they will be reported for pedophilia for drawing&posting and/or linking to fanart that involves a fictional character (or two characters) who is under the age of 18.

I used to have a LJ but I didn't understand it as much as I did Xanga. It didn't last long I didn't really enjoy typing long blogs about my day. Anyway I'm unaware of the drama on LJ but there is drama on all websites (in my opinion)... I try to stay out of it as much as possible.

I never use livejournal as a journal tool. XD I mostly use it for memes, and networking-- I get almost 100% of my celebrity gossip (horrible habit) from there.

Also, I'm IN fandom, so it's hard for me to ignore it. :(

Yeah, it seemed as though it came and passed. SixApart at least really seemed to own up, and while I think that it was a stupid thing that happened, it only affected what...500 or so users? I don't even totally understand what happened, but I think they just had a misunderstanding for the most part. I can see where they're coming from on one level, and even though minors are always going to lie about their ages online if they can, wouldn't this issue be somewhat resolved if communities that are full of adult material just go friends-only?

Erm. That's not what happened. The first thing that happened (labeled strikeout'07) involved ~700 users and/or communities being deleted. The big thing then was that a harry potter fanfiction community was deleted because they thought it supported pedophilia. A lot of very bad deletes were made, including a spanish comm dedicated to the book "Lolita". NOW, the problem is that users were being banned for fanart that LJ called (essentially) child porn, because the ages of one of the character in the piece was questionable.

For how many users it affected, go see fandomcounts. (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_counts/profile) It has over 35,000 members, all of whom are there to show that they are being affected by this/exist and shouldn't be ignored.

And as for putting things friends-only, LJ has now stated that a friends lock will not prevent you from being banned if the material is questionable. (Though your question was out of context.)

As of now, they're released a statement that addresses some of the issues, but is veryvery far from addressing them all.

I see, I see. I'm not a part of the fandom thing though I do wholly support it and the ideas and such everyone is trying to protect. I didn't hear about the HP community...that's so pathetically stupid, lol, and even more so about the community regarding "Lolita". (I love that book!) I didn't know about the FO thing, that's weird. I dunno, I guess I'm just curious as to who is making all these complaints? Disgruntled anti-fandom people? Actual groups/parents? Does anyone know?

The original thing was probably because a super sketchy group called WFI (Warriors for Innocence). I won't link them, because it came out last time that their site had spyware on it. :/ This all took place a while ago, so I don't remember much about them other than that they were super sketchy and didn't want to address the fact that their actions were working in such a way that didn't help in the fight against child pornography in any way, other than sweeping it under the rug (and thus further out of sight-->harder to catch).

From the first time, the communities that were innocent were undeleted, but some users were deleted for their content (and I think at least one of them has been un-deleted, though I can't remember for sure.)

If you're really interested, read (or join!) http://community.livejournal.com/innocence_jihad/ It's a community dedicated to this whole thing.
