Associations between the sky and emotions: why?

Why do we associate rainclouds with sadness?
Why do we associate sunshine with happiness?

As for sunshine, I suppose most of our better childhood memories involve it, so that may be the reason, but why do we associate rainclouds with sadness? The only reasonable thing I can think of would be that it is the opposite of sunshine, which makes us happy.

maybe because sunlight plays a part in our bio-chemistry?
as far as I remember it forms vitamind D (or something) in our skin, and well it makes people feel better.

or maybe sunshine is better because everything looks nice and bright, no? Laughing

Maybe its the act of crying..which is probably most associated with sadness ..tears pour down , rain pours down

Well, personally speaking I think it roots to a few things that have long been associated together.

Light = Good
Dark = Evil

Because the sunshine is light (and can be warm), it makes us feel good, safe, protected.

Because the clouds block the light, it is darker, more dreary, and does not make us feel good or safe or protected.

Just my personal interpretation!
