WinSit.exe being called everytime XP starts

Every time I start my computer running Windows XP, I get the following message:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSit.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

The problem is, I have deleted WinSit.exe because my Norton Antivirus detected it as a virus or malware. Now Windows is always looking for it at startup. Anyone know how to disable this?

Anyone know what that file is for and if I need it?

Winsit.exe is a virus/trojan. See: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/WinSit.exe-18551.html.

Download hijackthis http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php and let it scan your system. If you don't know what to do with the results it gives, post them here.

You should not have that file trying to run at start-up. So its a good thing its gone, just use hack-this (posted above) or my favorite alternative AutoRuns http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx. Autoruns is a bit easier in my opinion, as it categorizes everything and provides easy google searching. Just look for the WinSit.exe under the logon or winboot area and delete the entry.

I still can't find where this file is being called. Everytime I start up the computer, it keeps saying that this particular file is missing. I have removed it from start up already. Sad

WinSit is probably still linked to in your Windows-register.
Warning:
DON'T EDIT YOUR REGISTER IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!
Check if it is running by opening the register, look in the HKLM-key, under Software, Microsoft, WindowsNT, CurrentVersion, Winlogon, the 'Shell' option.
If you don't understand what I'm typing ask someone for help, because if you mess up your register you are in big trouble!

cant you just go to start/run typein msconfig then goto the startup tab then disable the exe from starting with windows

Just post a hijack this log here so that it will be easier for us to identify the problem. As far as i can say, this problem definitely relates to your startup entries.

WinSit.exe is part of a Worm named 'W32/VB-DXN' as far a i know it is spread via Yahoo instant messenger, it installs itself to various locations on the host computer you should check the following locations on your machine and remove any of the lsited files:-

C:\WINDOWS\dc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sviq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Fun.exe
