I am playing with the idea of making a webserver from an old XBOX (MK1, not a 360 as they are too unreliable!) there are many people out there who have modded their XBOX's to the hilt, fitting larger drives, new cases, led's, etc etc.... I have recently read an artical on how to install linux on an XBOX with no need to modify the hardware, although i have not yet tried this if you can run linux then you can run apache etc, and should be able to setup an XBOX webserver!
The pro's and con's for this project
Pro's :-
1> XBOX small footprint.
2> XBOX quiet running.
3> XBOX very cheap on ebay.
4> XBOX 10/100 networking as standard.
5> XBOX should have ample power for such a medial task
Con's :-
1> Setting it up could be tricky as the XBOX was never designed for this task.
2> Possible memory problems as the xbox only has 64MB
3> probably others won't know until i try
The xbox specs :-
CPU: Intel Celeron 733Mhz
RAM: 64Mb DDR SDRAM
HDD: 8 / 10 GB HDD (Can be easily upgreded)
PORTS: USB via game ports, 10/100 Ethernet, Various video out formats via video cable.
As a comparison here are the specs for a SUN microsystems Cobalt QUBE server appliance.
Sun / Cobalt QUBE specs :-
CPU: 300-450 MHz x86
RAM: 32-128 MB
HDD: 10-20 GB hard drives
PORTS: internal PCI, dual Ethernet, USB and serial port
As you can see there is not a huge amount of difference in the specifications of these two, obviously the Cobalt Qube would be much easier to setup as it is designed as a webserver, but bearing in mind that cobalt qubes are still fetching silly money on ebay the xbox is a far cheaper option.
I will post again as things progress....
