I'd like to ask if you think it's possible to submit an URL to Digg, given the massive amount of connections that can lead to, which might hang Apache or MySQL.
Do you think frihost.com and frih.net (servers 1 & 2) are ready for a Digg rush?
You are allowed to submit links to your site to Digg, Technoratti, Stumbleupon etc. So far, there have been no problems as a direct result of these links.
If it's a more or less static page, then it shouldn't be a problem. But if you have a heavy cms like joomla with quite some modules/mods, then there could be problems if you get a lot of visits (front page of digg).
its happens a very very rarely that you are going to be struck by the real digg effect... pulling more than 50,000 visits in a hour...
And if it happens so... i'm sure server 2 is doomed, all with its hourly restart, time-outs, etc. You cannot anyway handle so much... you may run out of bandwith.
The digg effect lasts for as long 24 hours maximum....
so if you average per page wordpress output is 20 Kb/view (considering no caching enabled, it may cause 20 queries...)
therefore 25 KB*50,000 Views = 1.2 GB/Hr
in barely 8-10 hours you may exhaust your bandwith.. if your page ever reaches the digg main page!!!
