20 A Week For Getting Married

newso
In england right now, the conservative party say they they will give married couples an extra 20 a week for staying married. Their reason for this is to encorage people to stay married and reduce divorces.

I dont think that this could possibly work, there are a few reasons for this which i have listed below.

(1) You cant be forced to like someone.
(2) Smack Heads, might just get married just for the money.
(3) The governtment will just make other people pay for this in other ways
(4) It makes a mockery out of marrige. Its about love not money

Im sure there are hundreds more reasons why this is stupid. Id love to here what all you think on this subjects. Please reply.

20 is alot of money to some people. per week, it could probably feed me lol. I dont eat much at all.

A floor in that idea is that married couples may just stay married for the money, rather thn getting a divorce and just live seperately. Then get a divorce when they come to remarry someone else.

I dont see why the government is concrned about people getting devorces anyways, If people arnt happy with who they are with, then they should be allowed to get a divorce. Not every couple is perfect, and some husbands may be beating up their wifes.

Hi newso,

first of all, I think also that it's stupid, because if you really don't like somebody, even money won't keep the couple together.. BUT let's analyse your reasons.

(1) You cant be forced to like someone.

For many peoples, money is more important than love, so some peoples can marry somebody just to receive this money and do 50/50 even thought they don't like eachother,

Exactly! That what Ive just described above!

It's always like that! They can promise you to cut on the taxes, but will high somewhere else!

Yeah, but as I said previously, some peoples take money as priority so they don't care all depend on their education that their parents gaved them. If they had a good education, their childrens will also have a good one and have the good thinking about it in the future!

If I remember right, it's been shown that high divorce rates of couples with children and unmarried pregnant couples tend to increase the crime rate once the kids grow up.

But I'm not sure handing out money to promote marriages is the correct solution.

what planet are you on. im stating the fact that people getting married for money reasons is wrong. I know it already goes on, but giving out more money will only help this increase.

and is marrage not a relationship now. so i think it should be here. Your entitled to your opinions. But to me, sounds like you just agree with the whole getting married for money thing.

The party gathers too much money on hand and seems no find better uses, neineinei...

believe me a government can never have enough money. Surley more funding for police and hospitals would take up any extra cash a government would have.

This is nothing new. When I got married (1998) you used to get a married mans tax allowance. The 'new' labour abolished that and left me out of pocket. I think you should get some money for being married. All the ear ache I get when on PC 24/7 should deserve a little cash from government. After all I am keeping the economy going with buying PCs/Broadband etc etc More cash YES PLEASE

forgot to say* Sounds like a good plan to get in government.

"IF YOU IDIOTS VOTE FOR US WE WILL PAY YOU ALL 20 PER WEEK BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE IN THE 70% OF PEOPLE WE ACTUALLY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT - MARRIED COUPLED"

Moral? I think not

not worth it. so you make 80 pounds a month, but i don' think it's worth living with someone you don't love.

I haven't heard of this hitherto this post, but I see it as a deterrent, more so than an actual preventative for divorce. In my mind, I'm seeing this 20 pound reward as a bicycle lock: so many of the bike locks that the everyman uses can easily be broken...if some guy really wanted to have that bicycle, chances are, he would be able to. But the bike lock is there, and it discourages him from stealing it. So in the marriages, if they really wanted a divorce, it would happen regardless of the money. But perhaps it'll make people think twice before breaking up their marriages.

They do something similar where I live (California, USA)... married couples receive tax deductions in their taxes...

Well this is just another way for the governments to try and do a cheap fix. The BEST thing to do in my opinion would be to attack it from the other end. Make it a bit harder to get married in the first place and make divorce laws tougher so people actualy have to think before they say "I do". On the other hand (sorry if this insults anyone) if you give the church something to complain about they will and im sure they would say something along the lines of "The government has no right to defile the sacrement of marrage with laws that are unspiritual".

P.S. this comes from a buddhist living in a lutherin country where only 0.5% of the popilation is buddhist

I don't agree with this

its good if your married but immigrants and people will just marry for the money (as well as the visa!)

People can stay married and still be separated. So divorce rates may go down a bit because of this (not likely, but there's a chance) but the real problem (people separating) would still be there. Also, I think people who are really unhappy in a marriage and want a divorce are going to find a way out, even if you offer to pay them to stay married and stay unhappy. It'll only be a matter of time for people to realize it's not worth it
