The .info top level domain needs advertisement, as it is not well accepted yet. Basically, the domain names are being given away in the hope that they will become better known and accepted by the public. But the "giveaway" is only for one year -- after that they must be renewed for about $10 per year, the same as many other domains if you shop around.

There is a good possibility that the main benefactors of the cheap domains will be owners who "park" them with advertising on them, then look to sell off any that do well, and drop the others.
