I can tell this thread is going to turn into some kind of long word spam thread, but oh well.

I've had a little look around on the internet and found this:

That's 1913 letters - I include it like this because it messes up the page as it's so wide. Razz

Apparently this is
Quote:
the expanded name for a tryptophan compound made up of 267 amino acids described with the following chemical composition: C1289H2051N343O375S8

Of course, if you're looking for words that are included in the dictionary and excluding scientific words (for there are many scientific words longer than the word you state) then you are right, that is the longest word. Despite it being considered fictitious, apparently.

I think you might also be interested in these two:

I used to think that the longest English word was antidisestablishmentarianism (Yes! I spelt it right! Very Happy), but this is not; looking at Wikipedia I realise that you can just add antidisestablishmentarianistically. Of course this word isn't in the dictionary, but you can understand it's meaning. It will never be used commonly enough to get into the dictionary though.

I found this page, you might be interested in: http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1534419

And this image too, from Wikipedia.

What do you think?

lmao that's halarious. I don't know any long words like that, but it's funny how those words exist. Honestly though, how often have any of you heard a word that long spoken? :p haha. Most people would just abreviate it, i know i would.

Longest word I know: ........................ lmao i can't even think of one and even if i could i know i couldn't spell it. I have horrible spelling.

In general, really long words are used in specialist subjects such as the sciences that the 'average' person won't know much about. Henceforth, most people don't ever hear or see these long words used. I think you would hear some of them a lot more if you became involved with a group of people partaking in an advanced specialist subject.

I bet those ridiculously long words are abbreviated to be honest, although I wouldn't have thought the words with 30 something letters would be; I know I would say them in full.

Shame on you Not with me around. I know there is little to say here and I also have a feeling I've seen a similar thread before.
