Bazaar

The word Bazaar or Bazar means market in English. I think it's an interesting word, because I have seen it being used in many languages, including Polish, Urdu and Turkish.

In Malay market is called Pasar, so it should be the same word. From the sound of it, I think it could be orignated from Arabic or Persian. Can anyone confirm this?

Also if it's used in your language, could you give the spelling? Hopefully we can find out how many languages have adopted this word. Smile

I'll start off the list here (correct me if I'm wrong):

Polish - Bazaar
Urdu - Bazaar
Turkish - Bazaar
Malay - Pasar
bartdou
those several kinds of languages you mentioned are homologous

What it seems you've found is a cognate of sorts in Indo-European languages. Things like this are all over the place if you know where to look. Telephone is sort of the same way - most Indo-European languages use the word with some altered spelling.

Bazaar is also used in Hindi and marathi alike
Infact we have Big malls named as Big Bazaar in India

In Polish it isn't "bazaar", but "bazar". "Giełda", "jarmark", "rynek", "targ", "targowisko" are synonymously words for word "bazar".

As far as Urdu is concerned, it isn't a genuine language in itself, rather a mixture of many languages, including Turkish, Hindi and Arabic.

The word "Urdu" itself is taken from Turkish, which means 'army' I guess. So there's a possibility the word bazaar could've been taken from Hindi as well as Turkish.
