This BBC program is a real eye opener and a lot of these topics are simply unmentioned in the west, especially on US television.

Quote:

Much as I hate to admit it, it seems that some societies can not handle democracy.
Indonesia is a good example. Since Soeharto was pushed out of power the country has moved dramatically towards Islamic control. Although not yet Islamic rule, that is still to come.

Churches are harassed and closed down on a regular basis and religious tolerance is a thing of the past. I am not sure how much longer I can stay here if the current trend continues, and with it economic collapse.
Since the economic crisis in 1997 Indonesia has been a total economic failure, dependent on foreign aid just to maintain infrastructure.

I think the move from dictator to democracy needs to come slowly, in stages. The sudden change from dictatorship to western democracy is too sudden and people think thay now have the right to do as they please because they are free.

In reality successful democracy is about social responsibility, not personal rights and freedom.
