Alan Johnston 'set for freedom'

BBC reporter set for freedom: Hamas

A Hamas official says kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston will be released within hours, after being held in Gaza for more than three months.

The statement by the representative of the Palestinian Islamist group in Iran, Abu Osameh al-Mo'ti, has come after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip this week in a surge of factional fighting with rival group Fatah.

A Hamas official in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, has been more cautious about the possibility of Mr Johnston being freed, saying intensive efforts are being made for his release but it cannot be predicted in terms of hours.

In Tehran, Mr Mo'ti said Hamas was in negotiations with those holding Mr Johnston but did not specify how he knew the British journalist would be freed.

He suggested Hamas knew both who the abductors were and where Mr Johnston was being held, adding the 45-year-old British journalist was in good health.

"We are negotiating to solve the issue peacefully," he said.

"We asked them to release him without any conditions."

Mr Johnston, the only western correspondent based full-time in Gaza, was seized on March 12.

His abductors, a little-known group called the Army of Islam, issued a video of him on June 1 in which he said he was being treated well, although it was not known when the tape was made.

Mr Abu Zuhri said Hamas was in an advanced stage of negotiations over Mr Johnston's release.

"We can confirm that there are intensive efforts to end the crisis of the abduction of Alan Johnston," he said.

"There are encouraging indicators that he will be released in the near future but we cannot determine this in terms of hours."

All I can say is that I hope it's true - I think it's quite terrible when journalists get caught up in conflicts, especially given that Johnston was the only reporter permanently based in Gaza to cover the conflict. Of course, what was exceptional about this particular case was the unusual length of time for which he was held

Of course, it's worth mentioning that while Alan Johnston has been held hostage, Aljazeera cameraman Sami Al Hajj remains in US custody at Guantanamo Bay since 2001, ostensibly because AJ is a 'front for Al-Qaeda', and numerous other reporters have lost their lives in doing their jobs.

Al Jazeera isn't an Al Queida front, but they are sympathisers. That said, half the middle east will be sympathizers if we continue on our current course. Hopefully a new president in 2008 will help change this.

As to the reporter... Reporters shouldn't be targets. The kidnapping of soldiers is an acceptable guerrilla warfare tactic, but targeting civilians is both criminal and terrorism.

First of all, the "kidnapping" of soldiers is illegal in that kidnapping implies that they are being held for political reasons (e.g. as a bargaining chip and/or propaganda usage). Therefore "kidnapping" is not acceptable whether it be a third generation war or a fourth generation warfare philosophy. It violates the letter and spirit of the Geneva Conventions.

As for the next president of the United States, what do you hope he or she is going to do?

Pull out of Iraq soon?
This won't happen because the likely result of a pullout in the short term will be a worse mess in Iraq then we have now. The only reason a pullout would occur in the near future would be an adamant demand for it by the Iraqi government which makes our presence there politically untenable. I don’t see this forthcoming either.

Pull out of Afghanistan?
This certainly will not happen as long as any sort of Taliban organization operates and as long as Osama bin Laden and other high ranking Al Qaeda members are free and alive. We will hunt bin Laden down until he is dead or captured no matter who is president.

Pull our naval forces out of the Persian Gulf?
This will never happen as long as oil is required to fuel the world. Currently U.S. naval assets are utilized to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well. But even if those operations were not ongoing the sea lanes must stay open under all circumstances. No nation can be allowed to threaten them. Thus the United States navy will always be there in force (once again, no matter who is president).

Pull forces out of Kuwait, U.A.E., Bahrain, etc.?
Once again, this won’t happen unless the governments there demand it. As long as Iran (mostly Shiite Persians) is a significant power and a threat, the gulf states (predominantly Sunni Arabs) will want a U.S. military presence.

Stop pressuring Iran on nuclear technology?
Except for an unelectable minority of candidates, I haven’t heard a candidate say anything that would lead me to believe that a nuclear-armed Iran is preferable to war with Iran. In fact, I’ve heard the exact opposite.

So what would you like for the next president to do?

Respectfully,
M
