Can somebody please tell me:

Are free websites discriminated by the search engines?

Which websites get listed in Frihost Directory? Are there some rules?

I’m not sure because I’ve read on the Internet that some search engines even check for how long you’ve registered your domain name.
Can a free hosted website get the same page rank as a paid hosted website? Or it’s just the quality of the website which matters?

yes the free hosted website also gets page rank, but that depends on the free service provider that u have chosen. There are many free websites available and majority of them are not so popular with google. So the sites hosted with them finds it difficult to get a proper ranking. But there are other free sites such as Tripod, which is more popular with Google and helps in getting better page ranks....

I agree with the above.

Also, for Google, criteria like domain name is very important, and domain name position in the URL also.
Some free services and webhosting provide you with a subdomain URL, ie :

http://buzz.marketing.free.fr or
http://drums.frihost.net

others just give you sub-directories addresses :

http://perso.orange.fr/parking/

which is not so good for search engine optimization.
