Hero Essay Contest!

What makes a Hero?

Every day, we are given examples of heroes—- from magical wizards in our favorite modern stories, to brave young poets speaking for peace on behalf of the world. They are people we look up to, admire, and love. But what makes a hero? How are they champions?

The Quibbler Newsmagazine, an online website, is searching for children of all ages to tell us what they believe makes a true hero. Is he strong, like a superhero? Does he have courage, like Harry Potter? Does he fight for what he believes in, with all his strength, like young poet Mattie Stepanek did?

The Quibbler, inspired by people like Mattie and Harry, is giving children the opportunity to tell us what they think—and win a fantastic prize in return!

The Grand Prize winner will receive a special copy of the newest book by young poet extraordinaire Matthew “Mattie” J.T. Stepanek, author of the Heartsongs series of books, Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait Through Heartsongs, donated generously by Mattie’s Mum, Jeni Stepanek. Inside the book, Mattie’s mother has affixed a one of a kind special bookplate, signed by Mattie himself, before his passing on June 22, 2004. Only the winner of our contest can receive this very special, one of a kind prize.

The Grand Prize winner will ALSO receive a copy of J.K. Rowling’s newest Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince—the DELUXE scholastic edition, with 32 additional pages of deluxe artwork by Scholastic Artist Mary Grandpre.

Two runners up will receive copies of Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait Through Heartsongs, along with one of Mattie’s other Heartsongs poetry books.

The Hero Essay Contest is open to kids between the ages of 6 and 17. Essays must be 500 words or less, and must address what they believe makes a hero.

The Deadline for submissions is December 21, 2005. Winners will be announced at a to-be-determined time. Entries can be submitted online at, or via email at:, or via web forums at:, or by post by contacting the Webmasters at:
