"nordöstersjökustartilleriflygspaningssimulatoranlag-
gningsmaterielunderhallsuppföljningssystemdiskussion-
sinlaggsförberedelsearbaten" 130 letters

The longest word in the English language that isn't a scientific term is "floccinoccihilipilification", which means "the act or habit of estimating or describing something as worthless, or making something to be worthless by deprecation". If you want to get into a scientific term the longest word is "acetylseryltyrosylserylisoleucylthreonylserylprolylserylglutaminyl-phenylalanylvalylphenylalanylleucylserylserylvalyltryptophylalanyl-

Which, if you cut down into normal english is the chemical construction of the protien of the Tobacco Mosaic Virus.
{name here} is right about the english one, although that's rarely used.
Most people would say that "supercallifragilisticexpialadocious" (I wrote that myself, so it's probably wrong)(and that's not in my google dictionary! :O (adds)) is the longest word, but it's not really a word, cos it's not in my google dictionary
floccinoccihilipilification isn't in the dictionary either though
The Longest word in french is AntiConstitutionnellement
this word means something against the constitution
that means being against the constitution, i.e. anarchists are all that, and then people who may disagree with certain points
in dutch:

Just between us... you know your posts are being watched as you have requested hosting? If you know, You wouldn't make this kind of posts.
This word is actually non-existent and you should know it is "hottentottenteNten..." and not "tetten" as that means "tits" in English. It could be a rip-off for the sexually frustrated, but anyway... bad example.

I misspelt it, but here is a dictionary entry. It's in Oxford's English Dictionary as well.

In swedish, you can construct words of different nouns and make them as long as you want to. It's just a bit hard to know where to ass the 's' that you need to do sometimes in the end of the words. The word wouldn't e found in any dictionary but it would be correct!
Is it like catscratches said... But i found a word who is very long.

Really? that's interesting. It's bit like Chinese in a way. You make up a new word by combining different words. eg, Fire+Car is train. Is this what you meant in Swedish?

If it's like any Germanic language then yes, you can compund. For example the German word for submarine is Unterseeboot(Under sea boat, literally).
the longest Chinese word is 4 characters long, such as ÆßÉϰËÏ£¬ÎåÑÕÁùÉ«£¬there are lots of suck words in Chinese, and also some other 3 and 2 characters long words, 1character is just a Chinese character, it's the basic unit of Chinese, longer than 4 characters will be phrases,
so in this aspect Chinese is easy to learn, if you know 2000 Chinese characters, you can read and write and speak like a native Chinese. to english how much? several 2000 words
In polish(32 letters):
Konstantynopolitańczykiewiczówna
the longest word in Spanish is probably "esternocleidomastoideo", which stands for the name of a bone in the human body.

In Russian ïðåâûñîêîìíîãîðàññìîòðèòåëüñòâóþùèé
Haha, Chinese have no any long words. Every Chinese word is 2 bytes in the computer!
I think Chinese is the shortest language in the world!
It is said that Chinese files are less thicker than other files in other languiages, isn't it?

No thats a typical compund
Eckalistikminister has been mentioned as one of the longest words, but I think that is a compund to.
It's an archaic word for
Ministery of education (and, I think, churches but I ain't sure of that) , in modern Swedish that would be utbildningsminister.
I've recently found this somewhere;
The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It is a a pneumoconiosis caused by the inhalation of very fine silicate or quartz dust. The only other word with the same amount of letters is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses, its plural.
The second longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary is "floccinaucinihilipilification," which means "the act of estimating as worthless."
The third longest word in the English language is "antidisestablishmenterianism".

Um....In Chinese, I think there's not a longest word. You can combine some words and a new word will be created.
In Romanian, the lognest word (non-composed) is:sternocleidomastoidian

Just to add to this a bit, here is the actual entry from the Oxford English Dictionary:
| Quote: |
| pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis n. (also pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis) [cf. PNEUMONOCONIOSIS n.] a word invented (prob. by Everett M. Smith (born 1894), president of the National Puzzlers' League in 1935) in imitation of polysyllabic medical terms, alleged to mean ‘a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine sand and ash dust’ but occurring only as an instance of a very long word. |
(http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/50182214/50182214se11?single=1&query_type=word&queryword=pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis&first=1&max_to_show=10&hilite=50182214se11 note: you need a subscription to view the page)
Now the question is: does the inventedness of the word make it any less of a real English word? Apparently it is not used in the medical community and has never been. Are the instances where it is quoted as the longest word enough to justify it being awarded "real word" status? Seems a bit paradoxical.
If so, then can supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (<-- this is the OED spelling) also be deemed a real word? It is in OED, after all
:
| Quote: |
A nonsense-word used esp. by children, now chiefly expressing excited approbation: fantastic, fabulous.
Made popular by the Walt Disney film ‘Mary Poppins’ in 1964. The song containing the word was the subject of a copyright infringement suit brought in 1965 against the makers of the film by Life Music Co. and two song-writers: cf. quots. 1949, 1951. In view of earlier oral uses of the word sworn to in affidavits and dissimilarity between the songs the judge ruled against the plaintiffs. |
(http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/50242490)
Comparing the two words, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious seems to get more actual real-life usage!
Take care,
Eyvind

{name here}, I'm sure there are larger proteins (composed of more amino acids) than that, which would have a longer "official" name.
Does the tobacco mosaic virus have only one protein?

Actually antidisestablishmentarianism is the longest dictionary word. As for the longest word overall it is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis which is a lung disease, caused by the "nhalation of very fine silica dust. I don't know where you got your longest overall word from, but most sources including the Guniess World Book of Records (2007) agrees that it is this.

In most dictionaries it is. However, in the Oxford dictionary it is not, and floccinaucihilipilification or a variant thereof is the longest word.

“PENTAKISMYRIOHEXAKISQUILIOLETRACOSIOHEXACONTAPENTAGONALIS”

Well, {name here}, the "under sea boat" thing is basically a compound word in English. Like Submarine in English is a compound meaning "sub" as in "under" and "marine" as in "ocean", so it means under the ocean.
And technically, you can make news word in English by using Dashes. Like marked-by-tremors. With the dashes, you made a new word.

Actually Hacker, the longest German word is:

It is the name for a steam boat captain's hat, whom sails on the Danube River. Anyways, that is the longest German word. I personally have never heard it spoken by mouth, and also, I have never used it.

There is a name of a king in Qing Dynasty, '法天隆运至诚先觉体元立极敷文奋武钦明孝慈神圣纯皇帝'. I think it's a word too! It may be the longest word in Chinese.
Hello all,
There is a brand new longest word in french language
It is the "Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobie" word, which very recently entered the dictionary.
It means "Fear of the 666 number"

Nakakapagpabagabag, I think for Tagalog.
