MacGyver, please help me.

Hi this is Uwe,

On my laptop, I sometimes like to listen to music over headphones.
My problem is, I broke my headphone jack -- the connector for one of the stereo channels just popped right out.
Now, if I put my headphone plug in to listen, I only get sound from one channel.
The laptop is still useful, but to replace the part would be prohibitively expensive, and to repair it would be beyond my technical expertise.
What I want to do is just mono-ize the output from my soundcard, so essentially both the left and right signal come out of both the left and right channel, which would allow me to get mono audio through a mono headphone.
I've tried to find a way to do this in Windows, I think there might be a way, but I can't figure it out.
Is there a super genius with a practicable solution to my problem?

Thanks in advance for your consideration,

Love,

Uwe

You could try monoizing your headphones. Use a razor blade to slice a slit in both wires insulation. There should be two wires in the larger wires. Take the thickest wire from each group and cut them. Strip 1 in of insulation off each of the four wires, and twist them all together. It should look something like this:

Code:

     | |       | |
    //\ \     / /\\
   ||  | |   | |  ||
   ||   \ \ / /   ||
   ||     | |     ||
   ||     | |     ||
   ||   / / \ \   ||
   ||  | |   | |  ||
    \\/ /     \ \//
     | |       | |

Or you could buy mono headphones. I think you can get some at RadioShack.

Thank you for the ideas.
Unfortunately, as I suspected, the mono headphone idea didn't work. Essentially what the mono headphone does, is it takes one of the channels of audio coming through the jack and sends it either to one ear, or both ears.
Since it is my jack that is broken, the mono headphone actually sent nothing at all through -- whichever channel mono takes, I don't know whether it is left or right, is broken.

One solution occurred to me some time today:
There is a type of headphone that connects to USB rather than the 3.5mm port.
I guess it has a rudimentary sound chip built right into the headphone.

So my followup questions:

1)
a. Does anyone know about these?
b. What is a good kind to use?

2) Where can I get a good one for cheap?

3) Can anyone think of a cheaper, more elegant, better solution?

Thanks to everyone.

Love,

Uwe
