Can anyone clarify how to make websites?

Cryptic
Well, I'm totally new to web hosting, but I know how to web design. I have a project for my 8th grade teacher and you can kind of do whatever you want. I decided to make a website to make it a little more creative.

So once I have the HTML's for the website and the pictures and everything, how would I upload them?

What is an FTP server? Something which helps you upload?

I tried Google Page Creator before and put my Dreamweaver HTML into it. The pictures didn't show up. Probably since they can't contact the source. Do I have to upload my pictures to a FTP server and then into the website?

Could someone give a step-by-step explanation on how to create a website?

Thanks
Handyman
Cryptic,

Welcome to frihost! Uploading your files should be a piece of cake. You just need the right software.

*First get Firefox and then add the plugin Fireftp.

*Open Fireftp in your firefox browser it is under the tools heading.

*Enter the ftp login information username.frih.net

*On the connections tab uncheck passive

    *Click ok

*Connect to the server and upload your site to the public_html folder.

*Your main page must be named index.html (files are case sensitive)

    *Go to your web address.

Well if we try to explain to you then it will just confuse you more, trust me I been there. Just go to this site that I was given and still use to give to others. It explains stuff very detailed so you can understand it.

To Handyman:

You do not need FireFTP to start a website.

Thats a good place to start with HTML, then get hosting and continue with PHP and somewhat. Teaching yourself is a good way to learn. Start off with some basic things like tables and headings and continue onto the more advanced stuff.

Hope you enjoy making websites.

FileZilla's good too (IMO) and also free.

I did a project like this last year, I didn't upload it though I just handed it in on a floppy disk, so if for some reason all else fails you could do that.

I answered the ftp question.

Diablosblizz,

Good job answering the third part of the post.

If you can view your HTML-only site on your own computer with a browser, that makes it easier. But if you use Perl, PHP , or other scripts then you either need to set up a server on your box or use a public server to view your site.
