Nicolas Sarkozy, the new french president

Med365
Recently, french people voted for the presidential elections and finally, Nicollas Sarkozy was elected president.

What do you think about that ? Personally I don't like this man... do you ?
palavra
his selection for cabinet was interesting.
An arabic oriented french became minister of Justice.(i think this is a first in french politic )

and a jewish oriented french citizen minister of foreign affairs.
Med365
Yes you're right ! Rachida Dati, an Algerian women, became the minister of Justice and the minister of foreight affairs is Bernard Kouchenère (sorry for the orthograph).

Sarkozy himself is of Jewish descent... I think this is also a first for France (i may be mistaken)... and also him being an immigrant,, another first for france.

Indeed,, a lot of milestones for French politics... lets hope a peaceful solution is reached for the Palestinian-Israeli problem that governs MiddleEastern Politics and much of the Wests (more so Americas) foreign policy.
Med365
Nicolas Sarkozy comes from Hungaria and is Jewish. He is the son of immigrants and the paradox is that he want to be very hard with immigration...

The choice of Bernard Koucherner for the foreight affairs is good, BK is a great man, he founded the "french doctors" (actually Medecins Sans Frontières), and I think he can do something for the Darfourd.
Also, it is a first for france that someone of a right part (Sarko, from the UMP) named someone of the left in his governement(Kouchener). (in france it works differently than america, there is the right and the left, the right can be considered as the republicans and the left as the democrates but it is not exactly that)

The Jewish community everywhere is active, especially the United States.
I do not see why Israel receives more aid than the whole of Africa.

He is of Jewish decent. There is more Jewish blood in him than Christian.

OK, one thing is clear - systemofaxav (a French citizen, judging by location) does not like Sarkozy at all.

I personally think that he is quite young, active man with power and strong beliefs - maybe he will, at last, be able to make all those reforms that France so desperately needs. Any change is good for France is good, in my opinion. And that he is immigrant of Jew descent - that's good thing, too; maybe France will become more modern and tolerant.

France is an old country, it has to change, sooner or later because everything changes, Europe changes, world changes and for me it looks like France is falling behind at the moment.

France needs reforms, that's true, but France is a tolerant and good country, and I don't think that NS will make france more tolerant as she is because of two things :

1. It would be difficult because France is already very tolerant (I know what I'm talking about, my mother is French and my father Tunisian, so I'm half-half, 50% french, 50% Tunisian).
2. He is not tolerant himself

Well the general publici is quite optimistic about that, aren't they? It's agreed that Sarkozy isn't exactly the most charming of people, but a more strict approach might be just what France needs to come out of this difficult period in it's recent history. Unemployment is up, their economy is failing, and the prospects are -to understate things- grimm.
I wish him the best of luck.

Only his mother's father was a Jew converted to Catholicism. To say that Sarkozy is a Jew is equivalent to say he is Hungarian or Greek. He is a Catholic Frenchman with a mixed ethnic origin (a European if you want Wink ). Therefore Sarkozy is NOT Jewish.

On the other hand, I don't like Sarkozy but there was no better choice. I also didn't like Chirac (because of the atomic bomb tests he authorized).

My opinion of France in general is not well.

I do, however, feel sorry for the French culture. It is quickly disappearing under Islam.

actually i couldn't understand what did you mean.

if you mean african based immigraton to france.

i think those poor africans deserve mercy more than frech people do.
Med365
I think people have right to look for better conditions...
I would have prefered that Ségolène Royal became president because of her politic opinions (she is from the left, the socialists), despite she doesn't seem more intelligent lol Laughing

The problem with Sarkozy is not to know if he is jewish or not, personnaly I don"t care about that, but if he will be a good president and if he will be able to solve the socials problems that are actually encountered (work, emigration, HLM etc...), I think a socialist would have been more efficient for that.

We will see !
palavra
he did very well in general elections also.
do you think his selection of ministers had contributed to this victory.
Tim Graham
I'm not sure what to think - I supported France's position on the Iraq War in 2003, but it would seem that Sarkozy supports much closer ties (read into that as you will) with America.

This article summarizes it nicely:

Sarkozy party heads for poll sweep

Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative party is heading for the sweeping parliamentary majority he needs to carry out major policy changes after taking an overwhelming lead in the first round of voting on Sunday.

One month after his presidential election victory over the Socialist Segolene Royal, Sarkozy is seeking a clear mandate for social and economic changes.

His Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and its centrist allies took between 45.6 and 46.4 per cent of Sunday's vote, according to estimates at the close of polls for the 577 seat lower house National Assembly.

The UMP, which holds 359 seats in the outgoing assembly, and its allies were predicted to secure between 383 and 501 seats in the run-off next Sunday, according to the polling firms CSA, Ipsos and Sofres.

Socialist disarray

The main opposition Socialist Party (PS), in disarray following Royal's defeat, faced the prospect of another humiliating electoral blow as pollsters predicted it could lose up to half of its current 149 seats.

With around 39 per cent of the national vote, polls suggested the Socialists would return between 60 and 170 deputies to the new assembly.

Confident of another electoral triumph following the second round of voting on June 17, Sarkozy has promised a special parliamentary session in July to push through reforms including tougher sentencing rules, restrictions on immigration and more autonomy for universities.

Shock therapy

The cabinet of Francois Fillon, the prime minister, unveiled on Thursday details of a $15bn master plan to "shock" the economy back to life, the first part of the president's reform drive.

Suffering from voter fatigue and possibly distracted by fine weather and the French Open tennis final at Roland Garros, many people did not bother to cast their ballots in an election widely seen as a postcript to the presidential vote.

Turnout appeared headed for a record low of around 63 per cent - down from 84 per cent in the presidential vote last month.

Prospects were also bleak for the Communist party, which was predicted to lose many of its 21 seats.

The new centrist MoDem party founded by Francois Bayrou, the third-placed presidential candidate, was credited with seven per cent of the vote and was expected to win four seats at most.

After a meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin French president Nicolas Sarkozy arrives at a press conference:

I can help you out there Smile

"Ladies and Gentlemen, please excuse for being late, which is due to the length of the conversation I had with Mr. Putin..... What would you prefer... that I answer questions? [he looks to his left, presumably to an aide] OK, then... Are there any questions? ... Yep, uh-huh, well... [Sarko puts the earpiece in at an odd angle]"

To be fair to M. Sarkozy, having to be in the same room as Blair and Bush for three days would probably drive me to drink as well...
conspiranoia
At first i was hardly disappointed for Sarkozy had won the elections, his inmigration policies, the savage capitalism... but it seems now that it's not so bad, he has relaxed, as you can see in the video after the meeting with putin hehe

We'll see after the elections tomorrow the real behaviour, and if he's bad or good for building the new Europe.

I hope he'll be interested in the spanish situation about terrorism (i'm spanish) and at last we'll can defeat them (ETA)
lyddi8
What was wrong with Segolene Royal?! I think she would have made a great President....Sarkozy seems too right-wing, when at the moment the country needs some balance and fairness for all of society, not just business.
