Maya

Does anyone use this?

And can I get some advice on the learning curve/difficulty, and where would be a good easy place to start?
Bengt
it has a very steep learning curve, that's one thing i do know Smile

Well, i've been using it for a year, and yeah it's pretty intimidating at first. But it is a very powerful package, and has been used it a lot of big production houses. So it's pretty rewarding if you can master it.

The first thing you need to do is getting familiar with the interface. My suggestion is that to buy a book that follow the instruction. A good book would be "Mastering Maya 8.5" (or newer). You can search Amazon for good books about Maya.
Then after that, just playing around with it until you feel at home Smile.

maya is easier to learn to model, but rendering is harder, 3d max is much easier to setup rendering, but not as intuitive to model, i say use sketchup first, get ur mind in 3d mode, then go into max if you want more architecture , or maya for more organic modeling, both can do either, but max has tools that make arch modeling easier, and vice versa...

I heard its a very good program but difficult at the same time. Probably I will start with it in a couple of days. But at the moment I do not have much to say.
peace.

Well the new version of maya comes with a lot of improvement in modeling department, like multi-resolution editing, mirror editing, soft selection, etc. But i'm agree that when doing render with mental ray it's just frustrating. But you can use other renderers such as renderman for maya or 3Delight. Learning Maya is very rewarding, thus i recommend it for anyone who wants to learn 3D CG.
