I am looking for something, preferably open source, that can capture screenshots and record them...and even edit them. Any help is appreciated, thanks
Recommend a good screen capturing application and editor?
I only know FRAPS, it's not very good, but better than nothing at least.

I've tried Fraps, and I'd say that it isn't really anything worth buying. You can try it and see how you like it, but I wouldn't get it!
Not opensource, but http://www.screenshot-utility.com/ has a useful thing.
Usually, ALT+Printscreen works like a charm, but if you're looking at videos or games, VLC works for video, while fraps works very good for taking snapshots. Photoshop can edit them, and so can paint.net, paint shop pro, gimp, Xara and so on.
I used hyper screenshot to take screen shots , you can get a 30 day free trail of it. Its very good , you can then take the image apart very easy in the program even edit the text. The older version of it was hyper cam 2 and that took videos and screen shots but hyper screenshot is only for screen shots but alot more feature rich.
I've started using adobe captivate
its da bomb! but primarily for software tutorials
