Sphärenkern and Arkronis website

Sphaerenkern
Hello. That is my little website hosted on frihost. Currently it's in german, but is even anyone interested in P&P-Roleplaying? Very Happy When you don't understand it (And I think that applies to a big part of the members), just comment the design.

Also on frihost, there is the Arkronis Website. This is a website about the fantasy world Arkronis and the RPG about it. Here's the same: It's german. The design here isn't really finished, but I would appreciate some tips for the design, though.

The website looks very nice. How ever it is a bit slow and with php it could be much faster. Also every text is in image. You could find nice fonts, but not every user will have every fonts. The font is nice, but slow within an image. The graphics are very nice and layout is very clever. Nice template Wink

I would say 4/5, because the slow loading and texts within images.

Sorry, made it all with a WYSIWYG-editor. It makes terribly big pictures and, as you noticed, also useless pictures. And, btw, it was NO TEMPLATE. I designed it on my own, but I used prerendered rectangles and stuff.
For the fonts: I used a very nice mac font...
The whole Arkronis site was 7.2 MB (!) big.
Yesterday, I learnt CSS and rewrote the site with a text editor.
Now it's 0.5 MB... It's not that super-stylish anymore because I didn't make shadows and so on, but much faster.
And windows-users have Comic Sans MS as an alternative for the mac font.
Also, I thought about PHP. First I wanted to make frames, but many people with which I talked about frames said frames would suck and that I had to learn CSS, so that's what I did. PHP is a bit too difficult for me yet.
But thanks for your critic, of course Smile

addition (double-posting isn't tolerated here, am I right?)
I also wrote the Arkronis-site completely new. It's now 0.2MB instead of 2.4MB. I hope you like the new design, too, I'm no master with GIMP.

Site looks now very tidy. There is one typing error in Wüstenvol site. The link has u-umlaut and that's why it isn't working. There isn't any pictures other than main menu links and submenu background. More pictures would be nice. The background and menu item backround fit well together, but text colour in the menu item and it's background aren't so good combination. It is very hard to read.

There are some annoying type of text in the source. You could replace <center> with <p> and add p {align:center} in css. You have some <br> tags before <h1>. This could be better with h1 {margin-top:#enough space#} You could also remove every border="0" atributes in <img> and add img {border:0} You should add a doctype. First HTML4.01 Transitional would be for you. Then change it to HTML4.01 Strict. If you want make your site cleaner and faster then consider XHTML. You should start with XHTML1.0 Transitional and after that to move in XHTML1.0 Strict. If you don't want to use JavaScript, then XHTML1.0 Basic suits for you, if you want to use JavaScript then XHTML1.1 sounds good.

The portal has gone, right? The link doesn't work and I can't find link in it.

This is all I have to say for now.

you meant p {text-align:center}, eh Wink I dunno why I should use this instead of just <center>. The other tips were useful, though. Thanks!
edit: tried the margin-top thing, it causes problems (moving other divs).

I don't understand. First, then, and then... ? I should choose a doctype and change it?

Anyway, I changed the site a bit again . I will make code changes you talked about later. Thanks for your help.

Sorry my mistake. If the margin in h1 moves the other divs too, then you should try padding-top in inhalt div. It should work.

It is easy to change doctype in steps. You can also change all at once, which is also recommend if you know that to do.
Sphaerenkern
Ah, okay, works Smile
I changed my HTML-editor (using Taco HTML Edit now), it writes the Doctype-line by itself.

I edit my sites by own hand. I use gedit which is simillar to notepad in Windows. NVU is pretty good multiplatform editor.

Well, I do, too. But Taco has some very handy functions, like marking the tags, replacing lines in every file and so on.
Now I'm gonna make a central CSS file... btw, do you like the book-image instead of the leaves?

Edit:
Man, that was crazy! The CSS-files weren't accepted because all the files were not encoded in UTF-8 (because of the previous editor), so I had to encode all the files and the ös, äs, øs ('cause of my family name) and üs...

The book image is better, but you could reduce its size. It is good to use PNG, but that image can be a bit smaller too. I tested and reduced size with 6 kB, it is not much, but makes site load faster. Also the colours don't fit. Blue text is very hard read from dark red background.

UTF-8 is the way to go Wink

as a designer, i will say it now (in regards to the arkronis site)

ban comic sans
Sphaerenkern
Comic Sans is just the alternative for the windows-users. Can you tell me a font which looks better and more similar to Handwriting-Dakota (The font I use for the website actually)

But again, thanks for the tips Smile

I have linux and it shows with MS Comic Sans. So can't you use other font?
Sphaerenkern
If you tell me what font that should be, looking similar to the picture you just quoted - of course!

Edit: Sphärenkern uses the same style as Arkronis now. Maybe it will change cause some more experienced webdesigner wanted to design it Smile
Corny.frih.net now links to both sites.
