How to make desktop link for firefox open in new window?

vw_bugg
I have links to some important pages for my website on my desktop so they are quickly and easily accessible. If i already have a firefox window open then the link on the desktop will open on a new tab in the current window.

Is there a way to make it open in a new window instead? Or be able to have the option when i select it?

Maybe even to be able to click on a tab and switch it to a new window would be good but i cant seem to find any extensions to do this.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

EDIT: I changed my search terms and found an extension to at least switch a current tab to a new window.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2062

But that still leaves my initial problem.

may be you should go to Tools=>Options=>Tabs=> New pages should be opened in: a new window (mark it)

oh didnt see that there.

Do you know if there is a way to just open the desktop link in a new window but still have links on pages open in anew tab?

there is Wink
The neat trick... is to make a shortcut to firefox... and at the run command change it...
let's say the initial run command is "C:\Program Files\MozillaFirefox\firefox.exe" (note that the quotes ARE included!)
Now, all you have to do is change it to:
<"C:\Program Files\MozillaFirefox\firefox.exe" http://mylink.com>
(Include anything between the <>; what I mean is use the quotes on the run command and after it specify the URL/LINK)
Give it a try.

Didn't work at first. It seems really picky with the addresses. I so far have only got it to take "http://www.yahoo.com" but no other variations on that.

When ot did accept the url it wouldnt open in a new window only into a tab in the current window.

Is there no way to do what i want?
