IT jobs - good salary?

johnsonap
OK, I already work in IT, and everybody at some point tells me i must be earning loads working in IT......am i missing out somewhere, or is this just a myth. I am certainly not poor, but am certainly not earning the cash to declare myself as "loaded"....Work in the East of England, just wondering if anyone else works or knows someone in IT, and what sort of salary they would accept?
ronald.helpdesk
you have to ask yourself some stuff:

How good I am?

How big is the company where I'm working at?

What kind of IT services got better paid??

If you can just be a little more specific in your formation, and list a couple of thing in wich you are an expert, maybe can help us to determine, why you are not "loaded" yet.

IT is such a broad church. There are so many different technologies and so many job roles within those technologies that mean it can be poorly paid to really well paid.

I remember about 8 years ago when the web was quite a new concept for businesses and they were paying a fortune for web developers, who were crap as there were programmers and not designers (so the website looked rubbish, but were functional). The tools were developed to make webdeveloping easier, designers got into the market, salaries dropped but websites looked better.

If you work in IT support in a hospital it won't pay as much as support in an investment bank. Then you've got contracting where you can earn serious money. I'be seen some contract jobs advertised at over 1500 ($3000) per day!!!!

OK, without been to specific (incase other company members actually read this). I work for a construction company, my job title is IT Technician, which is a bit broad to say i work in a team of 5 people supporting in the region of 350 users. Two of these people are what i would class below me in 1st line/helpdesk work, one is level with me but more on the software side (IT Engineer) and one is above (Head of IT).
Been with the company 5+ years, I am 26 later this year. This is first majour job in IT after Uni.
Becuase we are a 5-man team supporting 350 users we are broad in skills, but not experts in anything - hard to become an expert when you need to know so much, but having been here this long, i believe i am efficant at the job i do (virtually eyes closed stuff).
Trouble i now have is bought first house 18months ago....right on the door step to work (e.g. see my house out my office window) i love waking up 10mins before i start work....would i really want to travel 2 hours a mornig now to get to work somewhere else?!

It definitely depends on where you work and what exactly you are doing. I am in IT support for a university and the pay is only ok, it's not great. But the working conditions are quite good and flexible, so that offsets the money that I could be earning elsewhere. That's what you have to ask yourself, whether you would prefer the extra money over the nice quick trip to work and other working conditions at your workplace.
niggaz972
it is definitely depends on what your are doing. IT is a very vaste area.
Just have look on some website like monster, you will see the average salary of your type of job.

Here in Switzerland you can make a big money with IT! We really have not enough IT-workers so we have to take them from abroad.

For the last half of the 1990s I was taking home about 80K, travelling around the world on highly specialised IT work. The bubble burst, though, after Y2K. The money is around if you're prepared to travel for it. I lived, mostly, in hotels.

After about 6 years I was burnt out (100 to 120 hour weeks). I never did recover fully.

It all depends on you.It mainly depends on hoe intelligent and expert you are in IT.IT industry is vast. There is lot of competition.People without knowing anything about IT think that IT employee must be getting huge amount of salary. They dont see the hard work behind it.Before job one alas have to know about his compani very well. This problem is every where.

The worst salary?? mine. $25 per month. I manage a network with 10 computers.

It really depends on where you're working, and how much skill you have. I think a lot of people get the idea that IT workers get a lot of money, because of the prices that get charged in most commercial places for computer repairs. however, if you're doing IT work for a company, depending on both your level of skill and education, and the size of the company, you could end up making anywhere from $20-50k. And I wouldn't exactly call $20k a huge salary.

You're thinking of basic IT computer repairs. IT is a broad spectrum of offered services including engineering, plantation work, software developing, etc.

In certain very desirable services you can easily make 70-100k+ a year. I speak for America and particularly CA though, i'm not sure about other areas.

Well am still here, had a payrise a few months, nothing majour but a couple %.

Like everyone seems to say, could I justify working longer hours, less social life time, and more travelling for little more money?? Who knows!

Current job includes a company car and basic 9-5 hours and on (without been too specific over 20k?)

now ,i am a student and i learn computer ,i think this job is more laughably ,we can learn more others from it

as far as i know... IT professionals specialising in oracle is always in demand and the pay is usually 5000 upwards to 15,000. Sometimes even more. I'm not sure if that's the rate offered in your country but that's what is being offered here in Malaysia

But surely this is not a job you are actually working and living from this salary?

I want to work as a games designer, and the salary is a factor in wanting me to do it, for someone with 1 - 2 years experience they can be payed 50,000 and it goes up with every year experience. That is a nice job indeed
Maddy
I work in IT and I find it very fulfilling and make decent money. I have been doing it now for 7 years and am a project manger for major IT build outs and data center consolidation

If you can do consulting, web design or domain hosting, you may make some good money if you know how to design easy self-managed pages for clients that you consult once and a while with low interaction but professional. Could be low overhead with lots of potential.
sopetite
It's ok, the pay, but finding the project is not easy

IT Salary here in the philippines is not that high. I think IT's well be better at Singapore and Hong Kong. I've heard they have a high pay in there.

Here, IT jobs come mostly from outsourcing so we can't really expect a higher pay. That's the main reason why they outsource that job to us, for cross cutting. Crying or Very sad
Thundercloud
Also remember most IT jobs are being outsourced into other countries not allowing them to have US citizens work them

my dad was layed off for 9 months then a year and a half later for 16 months

HUSTLE MEANS HARD WORK, AND FROM THE WAY THESE PEOPLE ARE COMMENTING TO YOUR POST, THATS WHAT IT IS GOING TO TAKE, I HOPE READING THIS DON'T STIR ME AWAY FROM THE IT Field.

I too work in Software industry as a Java developer. In India aw engineers are paid less. Its better to work in US or UK.It all depends on talent and how quick you are in designing Logic. But where ever you are going see that you have worked on at least on one project.

Im also an Information Technology student based on the Philippines...Well, its up to you, on how creative you are to hook up those loads of money. It depends on the field you are working though...Network Admins have greater salary than Database Admins. though i'm a student, i generate money through selling program codes, specially on C++...(they have no choice but to buy my codes since my they can't pass the subject...)

talking about salary is very sensitive, but my opinion is still IT jobs can effort your life just like a normal. but according to the amount ,.. being an artist or celebrities could be good nowdays..
hehee
no neart feeling.. :-p
Fatality
I'm currently going to school for IT. Networking and Security to be exact. I wondered the same thing for awhile, however after talking to a lot of people in different parts of the IT industry I found my answer. Basically my understanding is there's a wide range of what people make or can potentially make.
How well you can preform your duties, how much experience do you have, what areas are you certified in, how willing are you to expand what you know and advance your knowledge all play big roles in how much you're able to make. Right now one of my instructors is finishing up 10 years of schooling, majoring in Networking, Criminal Justice, and Business. His goal is to to tie all of these together and find a job as a "go-between" for executives and their IT departments. Since very few people are available for this position, I'm going to guess he'll make a fair bit of money.
So I guess what it boils down to is what are you looking to make, are you happy doing what you're doing at what you make, and are you willing to do what it takes to advance to a higher level of IT professional to make that larger figure other people are making. Maybe that higher position isn't for you though, some jobs can be very stressful and lead to you hating your job. Try to find a balance and look for a job that is perfect for you.

Sorry for the wall of text, I started to ramble. But I hope this helps someone and feel free to add to what I said.
