basic question-> os reinstall

hofodomo01
This is a really basic question, but I pretty much know jack about software, etc.

I was wondering...I recently bought windows vista, and if i installed it on a computer that I already have (it's a dell inspiron 6000), will the reinstall:
a) clear my registry
b) delete my files on my hard drive, etc., etc.

I suppose my question is: do I need to backup anything if I installed a newer version of windows?

Thanks.

It depends - if you're using a Vista Upgrade, your files, settings etc should be saved. If it's a fresh install, yes - this will format the disk and you will not be able to recover any files. However, whether you are upgrading or not, it's a good idea to back up your important files before you make any major changes to the system "just in case".

Yeah, I have windows xp media center edition running on it right now.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up for me.
