Dear frihosters,
Joomla is -by far- the best content management system for me. It has a neat graphic back-end, it has a reasonably good wysiwyg editor for allowing users to create content, and most importantly: it's community makes all the plugins you could possibly dream of. Indeed, joomla has served me well in the past.
But that isn't why i started this topic. No. I want to know how safe information is, when you put it on a page that only registered users can access. See, I'm making a new site for work, and some information there is quite secret. Does Joomla offer enough protection from people with maliceous intent, or would my 'sensitive' content be easily accessible?
Thanks in advance,
Reinart.
I've used Joomla for quite some time now (including Mambo) and it is the best free CMS out there, mainly due to the huge support base it has. But with all other applications, there are it's flaws. So it isn't totally secure, or should I say it isn't totally secure by default. You can make it more secure by changing some settings or editing some coding in it. The security forum in Joomla.org is a good resource.
Joomla is quite secure, and you can make it even more secure, by taking the advice of the person above me, by checking out the security forum at joomla.org
I have had no problems at all. It has been the best cms ever.
I have built 5 sites with this cms and it has never let me down.
Ah, so they have a specific forum for security over at the joomla community. I didn't know that; silly me
Thanks for the sugestions. i'll go check it out.
I like joomla a lot. The only problem I have is backup and restore of the site. I used joomla!pack to backup it, but it got corrupted somehow and I was left with nothing. So now I have to start all over again. There is also joomlacloner but you need to pay for it....

I hate it. I hate its templating system. I hate its size. I hate its bloated admin CP. I just do not like Joomla.

You are going to get quite a lot of arguing for that.
The main point of Joomla is the ability to customize it, so it's rather for power users to get the most out of it. So what CMS do you like.

Such an honest reaction. I understand what you are complaining about though.
You should try the new 1.5 version. It has a simplyfied admin backend; I never understood the difference between a plugin, a module or a component anyway.
It also has cleaner html in the outputted pages. Which allows your css to be cleaner too.
I LOVE Joomla.
Its templating system is the best thing since sliced bread - using only one simple html file, you can make your own quite effortlessly.
6.4 megabytes seems a reasonable size to me. Adding on a little extra for additional components does, granted, increase this somewhat, but it's still pretty neat.
The admin panel is pretty complex at first, but you soon get used to it. And the jargon is fairly basic in my opinion after a little while.
Basically...
Components - The main part of the page, where everything happens.
Modules - Bits to go at the sides or top/bottom, or anywhere else you fancy. Normally in the form of side blocks.
Plugins - Small bits of code that have a specific function to support the other stuff. It's quite complicated so just look at it this way: anything that's not a component or a module is probably a plugin. The search box is a good example of a plugin.
Joomla is the best CMS
recently i built this site http://www.funnyemails.uni.cc/
its so simple too
Any guesses as to when the 1.5 version will be given a green light? It's quite risky to use it for a live site until it's an official production-ready release.
Hey Guys great stuff...good to see so many people are loving Joomla! I have done some training in recent months with Joomla! and Drupal CMS and have learnt all the little nifty tricks and hints that make those Joomla! created sites just that little bit better and more functional
I agree, but safety is still a big concern though. To be able to use https, i need a webhost who will allow SSL, no?
And could anyone recommend a specific safety-feature please? I've searched the extensions but i couldn't find what i was looking for. A means to have a very VERY secure section in an ordinary joomla site.
there are lots of program better than joomlar!
like n@board and zeroboard

Power users would never need large icons with lots of javascript padding, WYSIWYG editors, or templates written by some random person.

I like many CMSes, my particular favorites are Coranto, Dokuwiki, and Siteframe v5. They are light, and customizable, and the templating systems on all of them don't make me want to rip my head off like Joomla does(it isn't bloated nor do the templates look like a coagulated mess of incoherent PHP commands).
