AVI codec missing?!?

hofodomo01
I'm using the newest vlc on windows xp.

My problem is, I shot a couple of AVIs on a digital camcorder, and I transferred them to my computer. However, when I opened the AVI files with either vlc or windows media player, only the sound would stream, and not the video. media player said that codecs were missing, and it proceeded "to acquire codecs", and then it said "codecs acquired". However, there was still no video streaming.

I tried downloading an avi codec pack...didn't work. How many different avi codec packs are there, anywyas?

Also, I was previously able to play other AVI files without a hitch; for some reason, it was only the AVI files that I shot with my camcorder that doesn't work. Note this: I tried playing the camcorder videos on a friends computer, and it worked perfectly fine (he's even more computer illiterate than me, so I couldn't get any help from him).

I'm really confounded by this....some of my avi files work, and some don't? Even though by playing them on my friend's computer, I've confirmed that the file itself is not damaged?

Here is a sample video: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AL0VV04F

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had this problem to with me it turned out to be a dv avi file which is usualy the case when you have used a didital camcorder so try downloading a canopus dv codec. it worked fine for me afterwards. I hope this fixes your problem if i find a link i will edit this post.

Aight, I asked around and managed to find a codec. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, though.

If this Problem ever arises again, you shoudl use this tool:

http://www.riverpast.com/en/prod/dsdetective/

Quoted form the page:

"River Past DirectShow Detective - Overview

Overview
DirectShow Detective helps you to verify your DirectShow installation.

It shows you the complete list of your installed DirectShow filters, video compressors and audio compressors, their version and installed file.

Ever installed some software or codec pack and suddenly your whole system is messed up? Your Windows Media Player won't play the regular files anymore, and your video software, which has been working fine, no longer works?

Some codec packs contain problematic installation and they may replace your working filters or codecs. By using DirectShow Detective, you can find out the running versions of each component. It will help you to find out whether a problematic filter or codec has been installed or overwritten."

I hope this will help most of you with the same problem.
