Can anyone please explain what a Core2 Duo is?

Is this 1 Chip with 2 CPU's or is this 1 CPU with 2 "sub-cpu's"?

If you run Windows Xp (or linux , mac) how many "cpu's" are you seeing?
2 or 4 (hyperthreading)?

Is it in theory possible to run 2=>4 instances of the sieve at the same time?

Does this provide overhead?

HT is a term is connected to Pentium4 HT cpus ,a and has nothing to do with C2D because Intel drop NEtburst technology as obsolete. In C2D there are 2 logical units of cpus , I don't think that "sub cpus" is good word for that.

It is pure power thats what it is. No really, It is one chip with two logical cores, and normally they share a block of L2 Cache memory, to get more detailed just google the question.

On the user side, I put together a E6600 Core 2 Duo System and it is at least 20xTimes faster than my old AMD 3700+, it is the best card out right now, and has the most bang for the buck, starting out at only $185.

I think 20x might be a little bit of an exaggeration. C2D and Athlon64 are still pretty close to each other performance wise (for dual core CPUs), but C2D in general has the edge.

Considering I went for a Old Socket477 (or what ever) to Intels 755
from the 3700+ (2.4 Ghz) to C2D overclocked to 3.6GHz and thats Duel core.
2 Gbs of ddr400 SINGLE CHANEL to 2 Gb of DDR800 Duel Channeled Ram
From the older Asus mobo to my new EVGA 680i Mobo

There was a big performance jump. Yes AMD has some sweet CPUs out now, but price wise and power wise I believe the Conroes is the best way to go.

Core 2 Duo is Intel's most recent mainstream desktop core. Like previous posters said, it has two physical cores on one die. HT is no longer used or needed, as two cores are actually present.

When you right-click My Computer and go to properties, you see two Cores / CPUs.
