Game quality between PS3 and XBox 360

Before plunging into the HD arena of video games, how much difference is there between the 2 platforms when you actually play the system? Can anyone notice truly superior graphics in one system versus another? Aren't there a whole lot more games available for the XBox due to the longer presence in the market?

Is PS3 really worth making a $800 investment?

At this stage in the PS3s life, its doubtful that its full power hasn't been used yet, so the games you see for it now wont seem as good as those that will come out in a few years time.
There are more games for the xbox 360, but its up to you to decide whether you like them or not, you may only like the games out for ps3 or you may like the games for the xbox, just decide to buy the one that has games that you want.
