I work with the adobe premiere pro.... its so good!!! it really is...
Get AVID FreeDV. Why should you get it? Professionals use AVID Xpress Pro and other versions. FreeDV is free and it has nearly the same functions as the full one.
Only problem with AVID is that you should use uncompressed video files because then the import is much quicker. Also AVID doesn't tend to freeze when editing. It's fast when editing and is prefered more than Adobe Premiere - talking about the TV channels and film companies.
If your using Mac, then you should have a look at Final Cut Pro.

I remember trying AvidFree and there seemed to be something wierd about it. The export functions were restricted or something...
Anyway, it is true that Avid makes high end pro editing software. Personally, I prefer Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro, Avid has a certain kind of workflow I don't like and they bullied vendors in the early days to thwart competition, so I have other issues with them as well.
But, that version is free, so hey...

you should get "virtualdub" too.... for after edit
for example you can use it if your audio track is not in sync with the video
or for resizing/recompression (if you want to go utube)

Yes, AVID is a bit wierd in some ways but since I can't use Final Cut Pro, I have no other option.
