What is Iran up to?

Iran are holding 15 british serviceman, they say they were in Iranian waters, yet the britsih say they were in Iraq waters, who is telling the truth?

If its the british who are telling the truth, then what do the iranians hope to gain.

If its the Iranians telling the truth then why dont the british admit fault and own up.

Whose lying , whose telling the truth and why?.

it's a perfect case of i-don't-want-to-admit-i'm-wrong-cos-i-never-am. if it is the british who's telling the truth, then iran made a mistake or it might be a case in which the british troops were on a secret mission involving iran and therefore lied about not knwing tht they were in iran's waters.

Here's how it should play out...

Britain will declare war on Iran. Because the U.S. is great allies with Britain, we will assist in the invasion of Iran. We will topple their radical Islamic government and destroy their weapons program.

Ah, yes, we'll be in the middle east for many more years to come...

I could agree with you, Soulfire, yet I think Queen will be nice enough to allow George declare war on Iran first - I suppose she knows how much he likes to do it.

But, on a more serious note, I think that one of the sides is wrong, more likely Iran, but whichever is, does not want to admit it. It's all diplomacy now but I think if Iran is wrong they really should admit it - I mean, everybody hates them already for the nuclear program and now this. They are doomed, man, doomed.[/b]

The Iranians have paraded the Marines on their National Channel, have had them draft letters to their parents where they have "admitted" to being in Iranian waters, they have also "willingly" apologised on TV for the US/British occupation of Iranian land and the UN Sanctions placed on Iran.

So far Iran supplied 2 different sets of co-ordinants for where they picked up the Marines, one of them was proven to be impossible so they changed them.

IMO Iran are using them as a propoganda device, they are stirring up anti-UN feelings in Iran, for what purpose I've no idea.

They also said they would release them if the 5 Iranians currently being held in custody (info in links to follow) where released as well.

I am not happy with the way this situation is being handled, regardless of wether or not they were in Iranian waters they should not be paraded on TV and used in this way. I don't see this ending in a good way for anyone involved.

That is the newest event, on the right hand side there are links to everything else that has occurred.

It hardly even matters which one is telling the truth. (Is it possible they both are? Do Iran and the UK have different ideas about the limits of Iranian waters?)
Both sides now are too committed to their stance, and cannot back down lest they loose face.
I figure there are only three ways those troops are getting free:
1: The publicity dies down and everybody forgets, so their fate can be decided without the motivation of wanting to look good on the global stage.
2: One of the two puts enough diplomatic, economic, or military pressure on the other one to make the other one admit fault.
3: They are rescued by a special (covert?) mission at the risk of antagonizing Iran even more.

It seems that the Iranians are planning on releasing them. It's possible that there is a private deal going on in the background for them, but I personally think that the Iranians are just trying to get a little tiny share of world opinion in their favor.

Also, the goals of nuclear power are legitimate, and the Iranian support of Hamas / Hezbollah, combined with the 'alleged' support for the Iraqi shi'te insurgency is the primary factor isolating them from the rest of the world.

A point needs to be made that Hamas and Hezbollah are legitimate fundamentalist political parties, not terrorists in the traditional sense, although they do occasionally engage in terrorism against the state of Israel.

The Iranians are doing the same thing we in the United States are doing - trying to spread what we believe is right through the world by force. Our views of what is right are just fundamentally different.

We should understand the Iranian situation before judging its position in this incidence.

Iran was under a huge pressure from the west with regard to its nuclear program and it is presently being surrounded by hostile neighbours. American forces are present in most countries surrounding it. Moreover, there are two fierce wars on its borders. British troobs are present in its neighbour Irag, and the British are participating in the American campaign against Iran. So, it is natural that Iran responded agressively against the British sailors and took that incidence very seriously.

yes but the british sailors weren't in Iranian waters,so responding agressively outside of their territory could of resulted in an all out war had the british sailors tried to defend themselves resulting in casualties,Iran have done nothing to change the world opinion of them as a renegade country that cant be trusted, and to think they may soon have nuclear weapons.

I guess Iran is not seeing the dissatisfaction of the world. It's time to turn America's focus from Iraq to Iran... and I really hope that the world can see the reason.

It's entirely possible that Iran get slightly trigger happy.

No. Iraq is a big enough problem as it is. I honestly don't think my country could take Iran without help.
