convert a physical server to vmware image

ammonkc
I'm in the process of migrating all of the servers that I manage to VMware. So now that i have my VMware host machine all setup I have at least 12 -15 separate machines all running servers on Redhat, SUSE, and even a couple of Windows 2003 server (domain controller). I'm trying to find some software that will convert the physical machine to a VMware image. some of these servers have really customized builds of the software that it runs. so i would really like to avoid building the VM from scratch. So far the only solution for this that I've found is LiveState. But livestate cost around $1500 for a single licence (out of my budget). are there any opensource or free alternatives to livestate?
Thank you

Can't you just make disk images of the servers using dd and then set each one up in VMWare individually?
