Mall of America plans to double its size? Serious?

Dwyer17
Yeah. Serious. Mall of America, wants to double its size. Know what else? They want the state to fund it! I say no way, you pay for it yourself!

The mall, now the nation's third-largest by retail square footage, plans an expansion that would more than double its size by adding a 6,000-seat music theater, hotels, and an ice rink.

The $1.78 billion project would add new stores, too, including a Bass Pro outdoor retailer, and would connect the mall to the nearby Ikea store. The mall is aiming to finish the project by 2011.

The sprawling four-story mall already includes an indoor amusement park and 520 stores.

The people that run Mall of America are kind of crazy I think. Asking for state money for personal gain? Also, there is this new water park, huge, huge water park that recently opened called "Water Park of America". The Mall of America sued them for calling it that. They lost of course, because you can't own the "of America" name. Psh. They're crazy.

Crazy? No, just greedy, I think. In order to expand, they probably need to getthe city involved, so they can acquire property the owners aren't willing to sell. There is a real danger that cities will begin using their powers of eminent domain arbitrarily now that economic reasons have been ruled sufficient to use it.

For this project to go through, the city ought to be required to show a real developmental need for it. The city should then become the owner of a large portion of the new properties. Sale to the private developers could occur after the building was complete, and only if they could then get their own financing.

I don't know what upsets me more.

The fact that they keep building these monstrosities. Or the fact that enough fools actually think it is great that they can stay in business at all.

The lemming consumerism astounds me.

Oooooooh! Where can I by some of those lemmings! Wink

Seriously, I just don't understand malls....there really is almost nothing in them that interests me. Clothes, bad food, and jewelery stores. Bleah. I really don't understand the attraction.

lol he said lemming...

Anyway I think they should fund the mall because to have a mall that big would be pretty sweet. A bass fishing place? An indoor ice skating rink? MORE CLOTHES STORES!!!!?!?!?!??!? I say yes to all of those.. plus an Imax would be pretty cool also. Infact lets just change the entire state (whatever state it is) into one BIG mall!! FTW!!

Well, it looks like I'll be "forced" to go there more often...

haha!

I think the mall of america was too big in the first place. too big, too hard to find anything, and you know what, it's a pretty poorly designed place I think. It sucks that America is a bunch of mega malls, super malls, mini malls, mini marts, strip malls, and more malls. its no fun.

The more attractions that the Mall of America has, the more income for the city and state, so no, they're not being selfish OR greedy in my opinion.

Hmm.. intresting view. Well, yeah I suppose you are right, but still... Eh, I don't know, I just think that malls like that are big enough already. It's already impossible to cover all of the mall in one day, not that I would want to or anything. W/e.

I suppose it's going to become a vacation now.

It's amazing that we're on the brink (or just past the brink!) of peak energy production, yet developers are still charging ahead faster than ever as if nothing's going to change. As if constant growth is possible in a finite world. People and this culture are insane.

No surprise that they're asking for public subsidy. That's the way business and government have always worked hand in hand. Government only exists to legitimize and facilitate the extraction of resources from people and landbases for the benefit of private elites.
