If you really want to check for viruses, you should download HijackThis. HijackThis is a general-purpose processes/startup/services scanner. The log produced by HijackThis is valuable to an expert to determine whether there really is a virus or not.

1. Extract hijackthis_199.zip to your desktop.
2. Open HijackThis.exe.
3. Click on "Do a system scan and save a log file".
4. HijackThis will now scan your computer. The scan usually takes a few seconds only.
5. Once the scan is complete, Notepad will open with the log file in it.
6. Post the contents of the log file in your next reply. Someone might be able to assist you.

Sounds very strange! I believe windows 2000 keeps a list of installed programs in registry which is the same list that it uses for it's Add/Remove programs tool. The registry key is:-

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall'

I would start by checking if there is a list of programs stored in this key, if not it is possible that the list has become courted for some reason.
If this is the case you could try a program such as registry mechanic it may be able to help, You can download a trial / demo here:-

I'm not sure however if the trial will actually repair problems or just alert you to them but it maybe worth a try.
