>Video< Indestructible Jeep Cherokee

I just found this (thanks to a post on a forum even larger than frihost)

It may be old to you, but I like the way it shows how tough my favorite brand of truck is.

If you don't realize what I mean at first, watch to the end of the video.

-And this was a jeep that was already old and rusty...

Thats a cool video. Ive been thinking of buying a cherokee as a daily driver.

One thing that im not sure about - the description of the video says it was rusted out underneath but dont cherokees have a fully galvanized underbody. My mate carl said they all do - hes got a '95 cherokee sport with 2" lift, bigger tires and some other modifications he uses for fishing.

^That probably depends on how well you treat it.

Two things that can cause rusting on the bottom of the jeep:
*Leaving clumps of mud on it after going off-road
The clumps of mud stick there, and every time the truck gets wet, the mud holds the moisture next to the metal, instead of letting it drain, which causes rust.
*Driving on roads in winter that have been salted
Salt water is very bad about causing rust, and in that situation, that's what you've been driving in.

In either situation, you can mitigate the amount of rust caused by rinsing out the underside of the truck thouroghly, whenever you encounter such situations.

In Florida, we have the opposite problem; since its dry and hot here, cars usually rust from the top down as the sun burns off the paint on the roof and hood.

It would be interesting to know the kind of modifications you could make to a jeep to use it for fishing...

That sure looks like fun... they've got some cool hills there. My grandfather has an old Cherokee, he uses it to plow his road in the winter and keeps it in the back forest the rest of the year untouched. It surprisingly still runs after all this time. Not too well, though... we tried to use it to take out our boat one year and it got stuck. We pulled it free with our Windstar...

Rod holders mounted to the front, and a custom chair w/rod holder and harness that bolts to the back (not pictured).
I have schematic drawings of the chair but Im not sure he would want me spreading those around.

Galvanizing a metal is basically giving the metal a zinc coating. Since zinc is more reactive than iron it corrodes away in place of the metal being protected (in this case its steel). But when the zinc gets fully corroded away steel gets exposed and its starts to rust. So nothing to be amazed of Wink

Wow, awesome video. That would be a lot of fun, though I wouldn't want to destroy a nice car like that. Very Happy I really like Jeeps. A cousin of mine has a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Doesn't go off road, but it's really nice. I've always been dreaming about taking a Grand Cherokee SRT-8 off road across the country. That would be awesome.

Thats a very nice job of modifying a jeep for a specific purpose! Were I more of a fisherman, I would very much want it.
