NASCAR needs a new name

standready
Yep, I said it. There is no "Stock Car" in NASCAR anymore. These machines do not even look like their "Stock" counterparts. I have looked a "Stock" Ford Fusion and Chevy Monte Carlo and they looked nothing like the racing machines.
The race cars use NO "Stock" parts. They are NOT even the same size as their "Stock" counterparts. The only thing is the "Stock" badging.
NASCAR racing is fun to watch but there needs to be a reality check.
Andrew426
Yeah, they should change it to NA$CAR - That would be much more accurate.
ocalhoun
Personally, I would like to see a revival of the original premise of NASCAR, instead of changing the name, change the rules and require that the cars used be un-modified from normal dealership stock.
The original fun of it was to see the very same kind of car you own racing against the same kind of cars your friends have.

NASCAR cars, can't look like normal cars, with stock Chevy U can't reach 200mph. Safety (especially aero) forced NASCAR to build more aerodynamical cars. Of coure cars in '70 and '80 were looking more like stock cars, but aero knowleage was very poor in those years...

Read it: http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/official/01/22/car.tomorrow.facts/index.html

Actually back in the early '70s, aerodynamics were getting extremely good, and nascar effectively banned aero cars in 1971 (well, limited them to 305 CID)

Do a google search on the 1969 dodge charger 500, 1969 dodge charger daytona and 1970 plymouth superbird. The daytona and superbird had drag coefficents [sic] that rival most modern cars.

After a few races with Car Of Tomorrow, everything seems to be ok. Drivers are for new cars, car companies are happy, because new cars are much similar to their road models, safety is grater Smile But rear wing is awful :/ Like in Fast and furious... At Bristol, where COT first appeared I was shocked: "WTF is this? (rear wing)", but other elements are ok in my opinion.

New cars inaction here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMNu-Oi6Yug#

The 'Car of tomorrow' doesnt look any more like the stock production cars than the current nascars do...

ocalhoun: haha, that was such a fun post x)
But yeah, it would be quite entertaining to see cars like that compete on the race track!
clydejaw
Is it true that if you tag NASCAR SUCKS people in Alabama wud shoot you and stuff?

I heard a lot of crazed Nascar fans in alabama and they wud do anything to defend their god of sports
ocalhoun
^Aw, they probably wouldn't shoot you. (Might shoot your car though.)

It would also depend on what kind of car that was on:
If it was on a mud-splattered '86 Chevrolet pickup, then you'd be okay for sure.
If it was on a brand-new Prius, you might be in trouble.
Andrew426
They tried this on an episode of top gear, they got chased, rocks thrown at them etc.

Il try and find a link...

^They had a lot more than just 'nascar sucks' on those cars, and they were just asking for it.

Suppose I did the same thing (Changing the words to things like 'Elect G.W.Bush for a 3rd term' and 'NBA sucks') and drove around the streets of L.A.... Would I get much better treatment?

I just received the June issue of Car and Driver. On page 38, In an article titled "Is NASCAR Just One Big Commercial", by Larry Webster, he writes "It seems to me that only the announcers are concerned with the car brand because from my chair, I can't distinguish a Dodge from a Ford from a Chevy". He continues "It's a mystery how the manufacturers will continue to justify large sponsorships when there is no difference among the cars."
I agree!

Badge and car's name, they needn't any more... NASCAR cars are racing cars, it's no WTCC, so cars can't look like stock. Car manufacturers know that, so they are investing huge money for promotional campanies, like: "Buy new Chevy XXX, Daytona 500 Edition" or sth. They're using drivers image to sell their cars. This factthat cars aren't looking like stock is no matter.

I think Nascar should own all of the cars, so that way they would all be the same. So if everyone on the track has the same car it would only be a test of driving skill.

They're the SAME. Of course they looks different, but NASCAR regulations says that every car must fit to special "templates", so the aero shape of every car is the same.

Template: A device used to check the body shape and size, to ensure compliance with the rules. The template closely resembles the shape of the factory version of the car.

and

The shape of the car is mostly determined by NASCAR rules. These rules are encapsulated in a set of 30 templates, each shaped to fit a different contour of the car. For instance, the biggest template fits over the center of the car from front to back. When the template is laid on the car, the gap between the template and the car cannot exceed the specified tolerance. Each template is marked on its edge with a colored line. If the line is red, then the gap must be less than 0.07 inches (0.18 cm). If the line is blue, the gap must be less than 0.25 inches (0.64 cm). If the line is green, the gap must be less than 0.5 inches (1.27 cm).

Actually with the new car (car of tomorrow) all the car bodies are exactly the same no matter what car manufacturer is represented. They just put different decals that simulate headlights, grills and taillights along with a "real" car manufacturer badge.
This is suppose to eliminate the bickering the one car brand had an unfair advantage over another which caused mid-season rule changes and yet more whining.
