does anyone know how to make painting effects in PS ?

i really like to make some drawing and painting effecrs in photoshop. i tried many combinations of different filters. The results look quite alike, but not what i want. Does anyone have good techniques on it ? i also wanna make it comic and colored-pencil like. Actually i'd like to make an animation by rotoscoping of photoshop.

i found a software called ArtStudioPro, did anyone try it ? good ? i can only get the trial version... with a logo behind... so pity.

There might be 3rd party PS plug-ins that add comic lines and fills to artwork already done. If you are looking for free stuff, good luck! But you might want to try e-frontier.com. They have Manga Studio for still comics and Anime Studio for animations.

The Anime Studio comes in two versions, standard for about $50, and a 'Pro' version for about $200. Might want to check out the standard version, it can do strokes with varied weighting and uses a 'bone' system for animating that is very handy. It does tweening so you don't have to hand animate each frame.

Gimp is open source and they have an animation module. I have not used it but believe it to be raster based (I believe but don't know for sure), so you do all the tween frames yourself by hand. A lot more work but Gimp is free.

On the Adobe site, the section with all the different user-made actions - here - there's one in there for using Photoshop CS to make a great comic book effect. It works in older versions, but it doesn't look quite as crisp and genuine.

IMHO, the filters just don't do it right by themselves. For a more subtle effect you can use a weak stamp (using black and white) and a filter that does a paint streak to blur the colors. The stamp on top of that set to multiply works good if you're going to shrink it.

Deviantart.com has some great tutorials on their site for doing sketches and other digital looks using Photoshop. Have a browse through that sort of stuff here[/url]

Just an update. Alien Skin, a software comapny, just came out with a new plug-in that gives you different drawing styles-but it's $150. Anyway, you might want to take a look.
