....before the European Champions League was dreamt up to make loads of money for the fat-cats of Europe's elite football teams, a club actually had to WIN their own country's league championship to get into what was then known as the "European Cup".
I believe this is by far the better system, as teams playing in it really ARE Champions....a couple of years back Liverpool became European Champions and only finished FOURTH in their own league leading up to that.
A club really had to be good to win through....it was a knockout competition with each round played over 2 legs against whichever opponent was drawn against you....lose over 2 legs and you were out !
Now, a team can lose 3 or 4 games on their way to the final and STILL win and be called the "best" in Europe.
Bring back the old system and take the emphasis off money all the time !
