Internet in China.

I saw a report on TV that China has now stopped any new Internet Cafe's
being set up.
Perhaps the next step would be to close the existing ones!

It's sad that the best solution they can find to youth "internet addiction" is a blanket restriction affecting all users of the internet.

http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2007/03/06/tech-china-cafe.html

I think it would be more helpful if they could find a way to limit excessive use by teenagers. Perhaps if they limited use by the under-18 population to two or three hours at a time, they could allow overall use of the internet to increase in China, while at least helping with the problem of obsessive use. Of course, any teenager could just go "bar hopping" from one cafe to another, but it would do some good if it is less convenient for them.l

Enforcement of any limitation could be a serious problem. If they took the approach that teenagers are not allowed to use the cafe except with prior approval, and perhaps with some kind of a "ration card", it might be feasible to develop a workable system.

I don't think so by rules u can limit the use of technology specially the Internet. Should think an alternative and effective way for it's best utilization.

Who knows why? Is it censorship? or the Chinese were becoming porn addicted? Or maybe there are too many internet cafes?
paul_indo
From what I have heard it is simply to prevent people from spending so much time on line. Apparently some people are spending many hours a day online.

I wonder why they don't impose a limit per person, like a charge card sort of thing? You get a card which must be used for internet access and allows only so many hours a day, or week or whatever. I guess it might be easy to get multiple cards though. But limiting cafes does not guarantee people cannot access many hours a day anyway.

Stop setting up any new Internet Cafe is impossible in China. That is exactlly a serious problem that the teenagers abusing of Computer, but Chinese government can find other approach to resolve it.

Limiting the hours a customer can spend online is bad for business. Bar hopping for computer users is bad for business. Even if the government imposed a new law requiring "cards" for teens, cafe owners would just look the other way if, say, teens acquired another card so they could spend more time online.

From the viewpoint of an outsider, it's easy to say "abuse" in terms of above normal computer usage. You could probably get away with saying "addicted" too. But someone who's "addicted" to computers doesn't see Internet sites and games for what they are. They see them as communities and treat them as such. They work for things they can't get, or aren't as easy to get, in real life: friends, relationships, self-esteem, power. You can't just cut someone off from that and expect them to return to "normal life". They'll just resort to other things to satisfy themselves: depression, drugs, suicide.

By the way, I don't think it's porn that some Chinese teens are addicted to. I think it's online games (like World of Warcraft).

I have read the report and according to it this ban on new internet cafes is temporarily and should be lifted within a year. I think they are thinking of regulating this sort of business while it is growing tremendously in China.
missdixy
All this is gonna do is increase the crowds at the current internet cafe's.

this problem puzzled china for a long time. internet cafe's grow very fast in china these year. this time those which were closed by gov are all illegal internet cafe's. according to law , internet cafe's only alow adult enter and not alow open 24 hrs. the enviroment also have some rules, such as the space between two computer......
Some of the internet cafe's only focus on earn money, they alow children play whole night there. and they lock the door, close the window,it is seems closed but actually opened. finally one night a illegal internet cafe's was on fire and 24 people died. this thing shocked gov and gov stopped new one and made a check on existing ones.
Rengidar
Well, I suppose recently *everything* in China has been growing fast. I mean, more than 10% economy growth rate means something, doesn't it? But I think this law will not have much effect because of two reasons. Firstly, those cafes that are open will get crowded (and will earn a lot of money) and, secondly, you can of course stop legal opening of new cafes but you cannot stop the illegal ones.

If internet cafe business is growing so fast and is such a money-spinner then I think there will be more than enough people in China ready to break law just to earn money on it.

I think what they are doing won't do any long term affect. For me the best solution for this is to prepare them MENTALLY. Use education, use programs and seminars to inculcate in them what are the pros and cons of internet, when to use them..how to use them, etc etc..that's the responsibility of their parents and their guardians. Government should just support it and fund institutions if possible. As for the immediate effect, yeah. banning of new internet cafe might be a good solution to contain the problem, but what is their next step after that? would it help if they do just that? I'm sure with the billions of brain in China, they will come up with a good solution. we'll just wait. Very Happy

It's a shame that the internet is being cut off from some countries. It doesn't allow people to have access to all the info they should have.
budiman
It is not popular decision from China government. The industry itself will not be so happy i guess.

Internet info could be deceiving and harmful sometimes. =) Better infos can actually be found in records and books instead of the internet though there's alot more hassle.

Anyways, I use the internet excessively everyday, so does everyone in my country, but the government ain't stopping us. So why is China doing so? Addiction wears off eventually, the hype will die down.

Quote:
A similar crackdown occurred in 2002 after a fire broke out in a Beijing internet cafe in 2002, killing 24 people.

I don't see that happening in our country in those 24/7 LAN centers. I guess it's just these internet cafe ain't ventilating their computers well enough, either that or they really need to check their wirings and such.

Quote:
In 2004 the government shut down 8,600 unlicensed internet cafes after two middle school pupils fell asleep on a railway line and were run over following a 48-hour internet session.

I think people who use for 48 hours are minority, and they don't do that everyday right? So they should shut down unlicensed internet cafes, but they shouldn't stop more internet cafes from being built.

Conclusion is China has an ineffective governmental system. Resistance is futile, ever heard of that? The more you want to stifle this youngsters, stopping them from using the internet, the more they rebel, the more they want the internet. That won't stop internet addiction, it worsens it.

hmm.. this one is interesting.

China has the world's largest population so i'm not surprised to hear this news. Maybe the Chinese government is implementing this just to make sure that all internet cafe's comply with the safety standards.. It's a shame that people lost their lives because of an internet cafe.
mutouren
I havn't heard of the news
and number of internet cafe is growing
but if you want to found one
it would be much more difficult than before
and ppl under 18 are not allowed enter excpet holliday
dac_nip
by the way, what happened to this? I'd like to know any updates. it might happen to other countries..just though of making preparations or suggestions later on.

Does the internet cafe to be needed in China ? Rolling Eyes The owners of internet cafes cannot work even in Turkey. Most intenet cafes are being closed.Because everybody has started to have PC and DSL.
Soulfire
I love communism! Shocked
frozenhead
A censorship from their government I guess. So odd they'd do this one.
tijn01
When we were in China there were plenty of internet cafe's but you certainly didn't have free access to all sights. Apparently there is a nation wide firewall and we couldn't get into our email or onto BBC.co.uk or CNN.com for the news.....
China is a cencored nation.... but its very beautiful....
defnet
Boy, I find it kinda crazy to keep information from others.
Especially with the internet.

I can understand that they block porn and stuff and that they don't want our junk and way of thinking to influence their people.

But that internetcafe deal is kinda over the edge right now.

Its kinda weird to think that China is developing so fast while they are withheld from so much things that we claim brings development.

Anyways, It's their country. None of my biz. If the Chinese don't love it they should say so themselves.

Its time that we all focus on our probs and not on those of others. At least not if they dont need our attention.
prole
They could say a million. But nothing helps. Wink

That's the fact and nobody there is gonna listen to you.

The constant epileptic blocks and unblocks of wikipedia and blogspot said all. Just protest and scream to death, the *c* party and central government still do what they do, all the time.
eshoping
it's not the best solution for the increase of the youth ,and it can't stop the sorce of the addiction to internet what we should do is to open the youth's mind in life.we live so bored
wise
I think people go for the internet instead of other thing because they are limited\restricted to go towards it. China is not a democratic country after all.
