FTP uploaders and Domain name

I'm a new user and a novice developer planning to make an information site for my small business.

Questions:
1. how do you change to your own domain name? is it for free?
2. What are your recommended FTP uploader programs?
3. What are the needed settings for the said programs?

Other than those two websites you mentioned, are there any other website you would recommend?

Here are the details:

Price: free to $10 USD max
- provides .com and .org
- has good support
- accommodates site that are hosted on other servers (no their own)

I've already found some sites other than the ones you mentioned but I'm still looking for ones that people think highly of and trust.

You need to buy your domain name from a registrar such as GoDaddy or 1&1. Once you have bought this, you simply set it up to use the Frihost nameservers. Frihost do not charge you to do this, but the domain will cost you somewhere between $2 and $10 for a year. However, you will get a pre-configured subdomain (you.frih.net) that you can use if you don't want to buy a domain name.

We recommend using FileZilla. When approved for a hosting account, you will get a PM with the FTP and other settings. You may also want to read this topic if you have problems with FTP .

Ah ok.. thanks, i guess i'll try the subdomain for now as it is only a start-up, i'll try filezilla, the last ftp i used was from 4 years ago i think, does anybody still remember cuteFTP.

By the way, if you are still thinking about buying a new domain, I highly recommend www.namecheap.com

As for FTP clients, I've only ever used FileZilla and a couple of other ones whose names I have forgotten... I found FileZilla easier to use... but that may just be because I've grown used to it.
